I'm ready to put my HTPC in the entertainment center but when I remote desktop to it and atart XBMC, XBMC crashes immediately.
Is this a bug or my setup?

It's the same on my set up, and I believe its because you can't use sdl/opengl over RDC.

I just like vnc for this application at least because if I remote into the computer it doesn't lock the local screen of the machine i'm getting into

If we could it would be a nice one to fix. VNC has had a number of security issues

you might want to take a look at ultravnc. it should address your concerns with vnc. it supports data encryption, and can use domain based authentication. and you should try another SDL based application over an RDP session to see if this is specific to Xbmc or not.

if it helps, when you remote desktop to a windows box, i'm pretty sure windows effectively swaps the video driver out for one that does passthru so that the video can be rerouted (it doesnt afaik send bitmaps like vnc does, but instead instructions on how to redraw the screen + some small bitmaps)
this makes it quick, but a few apps dont like it.
for example, if im encoding a dvd in nero vision express, and i remote to the machine, nero will crash. it's fine if i start nero VE when i'm in the remote session. i'd say its defintely something to do with the lack of opengl support in the passthru
