Can't add video sources
#1
I'm having trouble adding video sources from my USB drive connected to my A95X android TV box.

I've followed the wiki "Adding video sources" page, but when I get to Step 5:
(Browse to locate your Source folder. Enter the Source folder so you see your titles. Select OK.)
I can see the TV box's internal storage and some network options, but my USB drive is not displayed.

However, at Step 3: Select ADD VIDEOS.... I can see my USB drive and access it.
Unfortunately, no "add videos" option is shown when I do that.

I got the Movies category working a few days back, and I recall having similar problems but I somwhow got "lucky" and it worked, but I
don't remember what I did. Movies play fine off the drive though, so I know it's not a hardware problem.

I'd like to know if there is a way to see what source my Movies category is using, to help me understand what I'm currently doing wrong.

Ok, this probably sounds retarded, but I'm new to both Android and Kodi, so please cut me some slack.

Your USB drive will already have been mounted, and so Kodi is already seeing it. That's why you can see it under step 3, but not step 5 as that is basically the mounting step.

What you need to do is go to the add videos screen, and use that to navigate to the folder that you would like to use as the root of your new source (remembering that you can't have movies and tv shows in the same source, but having "Movies" and "TV shows" folders in the root of the same drive will work, using each as individual sources) and then open the context menu for that folder (right-click usually, or press C).

Once you have the context menu open, you should see an option for "set content" (if I remember correctly). That will take you to the screen in step 7 on the wiki page (Adding video sources (wiki)) and from there you can set either Movies or TV shows and set the source up as you wish.

That will make your source, and you can then repeat for any other sources you may want to set up from the drive.

Are you the same as that user? is your box Android 6 (or below) and you are using v19.1?

Thanks for helping.

So, once I've added a source from a drive, I don't use "Add Videos" anymore. The drive is now always visible in the "Videos - Files" menu and I go directly to the the new source on the drive and select it with the context menu?

So is "Add Videos" only for drives Kodi hasn't added sources from before? I'm sure I must be misunderstanding this.

I followed your instructions and managed to get the "TV Shows" category showing something, but it's a real mess.
The scraper could not make sense of my setup at all.

I have a folder called Television, which has most of my TV shows in it. They're in separate folders and sub-folders for different seasons.
I added the Television folder as a source, but the scraper is confused. It seems to think I have over a thousand episodes of something called Philco Television Playhouse and gives a synopsis for each of my videos according to that. It also shows me original series Star Trek, which I don't have on this drive.

Here's an example of a path to one of my videos:
M:\Television\Star Trek\The Next Generation\Season 7\01 - Descent Part 2.mkv

Is this a problem I can fix without having to rename/restructure everything on this 5TB drive?

@jjd-uk

No, that's not me. My drive is actually showing up. I just don't know what I'm doing yet.

I'm using Kodi v19.1 on:

A95X F3 AIR TV Box S905X3 4GB RAM 64GB ROM 5G WIFI bluetooth 4.0 Android 9.0

(According to the advertising on AliExpress at any rate)

Unfortunately I don't think it is. The naming convention is quite strict to allow the scraper to match the show properly, which as you've already found it's not currently doing.

The folder naming has to match the show as it's named in the database. For example, ST:TNG has to be named "Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987)" or something close enough to it that the scraper can find it. You can't for example have "Star Trek" as a folder with "The Next Generation", "Voyager", "Deep Space Nine" etc as sub-folders as there's no single show called "Star Trek" in the database.

What you might be able to do is use a parsing NFO (wiki) file in the root of the show folder to point to the correct show, but that would still be a lot of work to set up as you'd have to basically do that for every tv show you have. You'd be better off biting the bullet and sorting out the structure properly, or failing that just using the direct access mode (videos > files) to view things and ditching the database to remove all the incorrect metadata you've already scraped.

To give you an overview, look at the wiki - HOW-TO:Create Video Library (wiki), especially sections 3 & 4 for movies and TV shows respectively.

This is the answer I have been looking for off an on for years! I recently lost the ability to connect to the usb drive attached to my router and just wanted to run straight off the nvme drive pluggedinto my tv usb and have been chasing it around again for the last week or so.  I have seen so many people asking this question without a good answer. They need to put this front and center on the Kpodi wiki. Thank you!
