Video Player has Sound but no Image with larger 4K files
#1
Hello,

When using the native Kodi Media Player on my htpc with larger 4K files I get sound but no image. This is with the hardware acceleration turned on. If I turn the hardware acceleration off, there is an image, but the video will only play with a tremendous amount of frame drops and stuttering. If I use MPC-BE or VLC, these files play fine, but I prefer the interface of the native Kodi media player. As a note, the htpc with this problem uses a Pentium Silver N6005. On my laptop, which uses an i7-10510, the native Kodi video player works fine with hardware acceleration. The problem of failing to produce an image is specific to the Pentium Silver device. Here is a link to my log file:

Quick note—these 4K files are stored and played from a NAS.

This is Windows specific and could be moved that sub forum.

Quick workaround: select the Player->Render method "Pixel Shaders"  instead of Auto.

The dxva processor (selected by render method "dxva", or "auto" when hw decoding is enabled) doesn't like something.
See all the errors "DXVA::CProcessorHD::Render: VideoProcessorBlt returned -7FF8FFA9 - E_INVALIDARG (The parameter is incorrect.) while VideoProcessorBlt execution."

If you want to keep dxva processing (not the same as dxva decoding! which you require) you could try changing a few settings.
The dxva error messages are not clear and this processor may have some limitations we're not aware of.
In your log, Kodi is trying to output the video in 8 bit.
You could try changing the System->Display->Use 10 bit for SDR to Always
Or with Use 10 bit for SDR set to Never, you could change Video->Use high precision processing to false.

Do files with a resolution lower than 4k resolution work fine? If you have some, what happens for a 4k SDR video?

Ok,

4K 8-Bit SDR files seem to work. Everything non UHD works fine. HDR files seem to work when I change the rendering to “Pixel Shaders”. Changing the system display settings didn’t seem to work, but changing the rendering from Auto to Pixel Shaders does. Again, I’ve had no issues outputting all 4K video to the display using my laptop with the i7-10510u…so I’m assuming the problem likely has something to do with the Pentium Silver n6005. Maybe it’s just getting overtaxed.

Again, thank you so much for your help!

it advertises itself as able to do HDR-SDR conversions with dxva but somehow fails. I didn't lookup the specs of that igpu, could be a driver issue.
Hard to say without having a N6005 on hand.

this can be considered fixed as a workaround was found, but not the root cause.
