XBMC launched from snes controller??
#1
Okay Im kinda new to XBMC I have used it before on my moded xbox but now I want to try another mod and I need as much help as i can get. I recently saw on youtube that this gut but XBMC on a thumbdrive inside his moded snes controller. When he plugs it into the computer it pops up with the screen that asks what you wan tto do with the device. After he does some explaining he clicks on the first choice it gives then launches XBMC. He cycles through the menu and goes to games at which point he chooses an emulator and after that all the games for that specific emulator pop up. Now I would like to now how he set it up to just launch from a usb like that, and how he set up the games and roms. I would like to specifically run Famicom, Super famicom, Nes, Snes, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy, and Gameboy color. I already have my roms and emulators I just need to know how to set it up, I can figure out wiring the thumb drive into the usb controller myself. Im very sorry if this is a repost Im actually quite good at modding stuff I just cant wrap my brain around this as fast as I would like, OH BTW I would also like it to auto launch on Mac OSX and windows if possible if not then just Mac. I know it sounds like alot but Im sure its nothing for you gurus out there. I would try and do better at figuring it out but I cant understand what the guy is saying to save my life here the youtube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVFaY2ETQ_Y

He is using a combination of hardware and software to get this done.
  • First he has a modded SNES controller with a built in thumb drive
  • Portible version of XBMC is installed on the thumb drive
  • He controls XBMC and the emulator using Event Ghost
  • He uses the Advanced Launcher Application to launch the roms from the XBMC gui

This is one method that works well I guess for him but it is not the method I would use.
  • It would be much easier to use a full PC with XBMC installed.
  • Make XBMC and Event Ghost run at startup in Windows 7
  • Use Advanced Launcher and Event Ghost in a similar fashion as above

Also, you can buy usb type SNES controllers if you don't feel the need to do the hardware modding but it seems like you have experience so it might be a fun project.

well I wanted to do it all from the remote, Ive got a couple mods under my belt so far and im a pretty quick learner, I do stuff like this as a job and hobby so Im usually always doing something interesting. I had already picked a micro processor for the usb controller mod but i figured id just buy one to save time but ill still open it up and add an 8gb usb. Could you explain event ghost and advanced launcher application in caveman form for me so i can get a small understandin of it all better, could event ghost be controlled on osx and windows or jsut one or the other

Check the thread for Advanced Launcher. It has everything you need to know. Basically Advanced L is a program that launches other programs, not strictly emulators. It can launch web browsers, emulators, external players......list goes on.

Event Ghost is only available in Windows AFAIK. I've never set it up since I use Linux.

Alright thanks for the help I think I can manage from here, any other suggestions though? I assume that i can still change the skins even though its the portable edition. I already bought the controller and have already torn apart my 8gb thumb drive to just the board. I will open the controller, and jumper the wires from the usb side of the controller to my 8gb usb according to the pin out. now I am assuming that the controller doesnt need a specific driver so that it will work on my computer, so Im thinking whenever i plug it in it should say device recognized blah blah blah then give me the option of what to do with the usb. If all that goes well Ill burn an iso of portable XBMC to a cd, restart, fire it up and install it to my thumb drive/controller. After that all i need to do is put the emulators and roms on my controller and setup the pathways. How does that sound?? Did I miss anything?? Do I have to setup a path for a picture of the emulator machine? How do the roms get their pictures I have seen videos on youtube of the roms and the look like game covers do I need to download them and set paths for them as well. Here is a pic of the controller I got one that looks like an original Famicom but with extra buttons so that i can use it with snes roms as well. This thing will be awesome if i can pull it off. I think that if i can I will make one out of a sega saturn controller with a bigger thumb drive and put nothing but sega systems on it, this one is a nintendo controller so that is why it will have nothing but nintendo based roms on it.Should I post images of my progress Image

For a Linux install: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=49781 I'd recommend following method 1.

Windows install is a bit more work as you have to persuade Windows to run off the USB first.

well the pint of it was to launch in windows like a portable app. The Idea was for me to plug in my thumb drive, windows bring up its menu for me to pick what i want to do, i choose xbmc and it launch, then go to games and set the paths and all that good stuff. Im just trying to get it to launch like a portable app from inside windows. I guess I could just install xbmc straight to the usb drive and restart and boot into it to use it but i really wanted to launch it from within windows

okay i just read around the forum a bit and from my understanding i can install XBMC inside windows, then after I am done instead of running it or starting it I go to the programs folder and cut or copy the XBMC folder and paste it in my thumb drive. I read somewhere that i have to put -e somwhere or erasw -e somewhere so that it will sava all settings and stuff in the XBMC folder. Am I on the right path now??
