A new version of mythbuntu was just released for those wanting an easy way to set up a backend.

Mythbuntu is also useful as a light version of Ubuntu to install xbmc onto for a frontend/client. Gives you the myth and xbmc pvr options.

I upgraded my backend from Mythbuntu 12.04 to 14.04 (going from MythTV 0.26 -> 0.27 in the process). The process was extremely smooth. The only small hiccup I encountered was needing to manually delete /etc/apache2/sites-available/mythweb.conf and then re-install mythweb.

Gotham + 0.27 is a big improvement over Frodo + 0.26. In particular, the channel changes with my HD-PVR take only 4-5 seconds as opposed to 11-12 seconds before.

Hello All:

Just now jumping into the XBMC and MythTV game. A friend has separate machines for each.
Is this the normal or recommended config? He is using a Intel NUC (I3 core) for XBMC and something else for MythTV. If I had big enough hardware I5 or I7, plenty of RAM, SSD, GPU, etc can it be run all on one device? Of course storage for the PVR will be NAS.

Yes of course it can be run on one machine. However it is good system design to separate your media server and backend from your watching device.

Responding a bit late here, but until about a year ago I had every HTPC/PVR/NAS feature - including MythTV, XBMC, and lots of other background services - running on a six-year-old Core2 Duo with 2GB RAM and a GT 8400. It ran fine. A lower-end i3 should be more than adequate if that's the route you want to go.
