Live Sports - Not as crisp
#1
I am experiencing something strange regarding live sports. The best way to describe it is simply not as 'crisp' as a standard tv show. What I mean is compared to Windows Media Center, when watching live sports, for example hockey, which has a lot of fast camera moves and moving objects, the picture is not a clear as WMC. Other shows, in fact every other tv show, except sports, (NFL also when it was on) experienced this.

I am wondering if anyone else has similar experiences?

I have limited hardware to test on as my suspicion is it is related to that. Recently I have tested with an intel i5, 8gb ram and experienced the same quality. To be clear, I have WMC and ServerWMC on the same station, with XBMC also on that station. There is no network involved.

Input anyone? Or is it a limitation of XBMC being able to handle the stream correctly?

Settings>video>playback>Adjust refresh rate to match video Turn this ON
While watching a video press OK/enter go to the video icon turn deinterlace to auto and save as default
If I have been of help, please add to my reputation as a way of saying thanks, it's free.

I have done this actually, sorry for not mentioning it. When I do that it actually makes it worse, the picture gets slow and choppy, and becomes unwatchable.

I haven't noticed this. What you are describing sounds like an interlacing problem, which is why deinterlacing needs to be turned on. The other setting mentioned I keep at the xbmc default It makes no sense to me that turning on deinterlacing makes everything worse. I keep deinterlace on 'auto' too.

Are you seeing this problem only with live tv streams, or do you also see it when playing back saved sports recordings?

The issue seems to only be with live streams. Recordings seem to playback correctly. I will do some more checking and testing this weekend, and report back.

Thanks for the input!

Ok. If you find that it really is only with live streams, then go to the debug tab in swmc and turn off 'delete temporary stream files'. Then when you watch the sports event, the live ts file and the original wtv file won't be deleted when you stop watching it (find them in the tempswmc directory). Then you can compare the ts file to the wtv file in different players to see if there really is a difference. It would be really interesting if there is a difference so let us know..
