Well theres an easy solution to that, export to .nfo's and you will retain all that data upon re-import into the new clean database.

Good point. Alternatively, a single file export, then delete all the non-artist information.

I've tried exporting to NFOs before. It went well for my "folder" artists but didn't work so well for compilation artists. Where will these NFOs be created for xbmc to pick up?

I think single-file export is better. Creates one xml file in location you pick when you export. You might have a problem though with fanart and thumbs for compilation artists not being picked up from the import.
