If I enter the TV Show I have to scroll down to the next unwatched episode.
Is it possible that Kodi places the selection on the first unwatched episode after entering the season?

There's a setting to do this somewhere in Settings -> Videos -> Library (for v16).

I don't have this setting running v17 Beta 5!

Settings -> Media -> Videos -> "Library" sub-heading -> "Select first unwatched TV show season/episode".

Change the Settings Level in bottom left from the default of Standard to either Advanced or Expert.

DOH! The path Settings->Media->Videos->Library worked (Leia 19) but, at first, I wasn't scrolling down far enough. Sigh. Oldzheimers.
