Support for external audio tracks?
#1
Hello. Plex user here, used to use Kodi a long while ago. Thinking of trying it out again.

Does Kodi currently support playing MKV files with external audio tracks? I believe this was an old feature XBMC/Kodi had at some point, but am unable to confirm/currently get it working.

Basically looking to be able to have a movie and an audio track in the same directory with the same file name (ex. MyMovie.mkv and MyMovie.flac) and then able to play that MKV in Kodi and select MyMovie.flac as the external audio track to play along with the video.

I currently have an MKV and FLAC file in the same directory with the same file name, but when in Kodi am only seeing the one audio track contained within the container. Going into the audio track selection menu does not display a second audio track or anything with an [External] tag.

Can anyone confirm that support for external audio tracks is still a feature within Kodi? Would like to know for both Windows and Android (though primary interest is Kodi Android via PKC).

Found this thread on the forums that seems to confirm this feature exists.

Also, if Kodi does currently support external audio tracks, does this support extend to Kodi when using it with PlexKodiConnect on Android?

Primary use scenario is watching media content on an Nvidia Shield 2019 via Kodi Android with the library managed by Plex/PlexKodiConnect.

Thanks for any info anyone can provide!

Edit: Kodi and PKC both support playing external audio files. You need to enable direct paths in PKC.

Yes it's still a supported feature.

That is most likely your problem. Put the files on local drive/usb and then try again to avoid the Plex/PlexKodiConnect setup this will give you the proof of what's at fault. If it still doesn't work from local drive/usb then there could be a bug.

Thanks for the reply. So I just took my external hard drive, plugged it in directly the Shield, and played the MKV file via Kod's File Manager and was able to select and play the external audio file alongside the MKV.

Any idea how I might be able to remedy the issue when PlexKodiConnect is a part of the equation?

No idea, you'll have to ask the developer of the addon.

Sounds good. Submitted a ticket at the PlexKodiConnect GitHub, if anyone else is interested or experiencing this issue.

I think if you turn on debug logging and review your logs, you should see Kodi looking for external audio and sub files when you select a video to play in the log, so that might give you a clue.
