Building HTPC to run XBMC...

I'm going to replace my Xbox with a computer. Why?
-Xbox is starting to feel really slow when browsing my library
-Has problems with HD videos
-Building computers is fun

To that end I have put together this system on Newegg:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Public...er=6747934
The relevant stuff here:
-one of those small Shuttle barebones (only 8" by 7.5" by 11")
-Intel G33 Northbridge
-Intel ICH9DH Southbridge
-Integrated Intel GMA 3100 graphics with HDMI output
-Integrated Realtek ALC888DD audio interface with SPDIF output
-2GB of DDR2 800 RAM
-Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz E7200 Wolfdale 3MB L2 Cache
-Anywhere USB IR remote receiver (MCE logo'd)

The basic plan is to use all this stuff to do 720p output and then if/when I get a 1080 display then I'll upgrade the CPU and / or install a real graphics card. My current screen is one of those 32" LCDs that's natively 1366 by 768, and I've been happy with the Xbox's 720p output for a long time.
So do you guys think that will work?
Also I am a still haven't really hit a point where Linux or Windows XP is the clear choice.
Windows XP = really easy, no learning required
Linux = Interesting and neato, and roommate can't break it with malware ^_^
Also if this topic is somehow wrong due to a lack of searching, I apologize. The proxy I have to use to get to this site from work makes it really really slow Sad

also forgot to mention, I only plan on using the receiver part of the IR remote, along with my Logitech Harmony.

sounds like you have a solid base for XBMC to run on. You should only need to get a discrete video card to support 1080 output, but one's strong enough to do that are getting cheaper daily (say a Nvidia 7600GT/ATI 3850).

Then storage is your only other concern Smile

I have 3TB of storage in a server already, this is JUST the front end which is replacing an Xbox...

Does it really matter what video card you buy for XBMC? I have a 2 beer worth of gf 7100GS with 64Mb ram on PCI-E bus. I did not try that card yet but i believe it will be no different than my current ati 3780 due to no hardware decoding assist support from xbmc. Or em i completely wrong?

My proposed setup is as follows:

ASRock K10N750SLI-WiFi AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 750a SLI ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Windsor 3.2GHz Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core Processor Model ADX6400IAA6CZ
PALiT NE/9600T+0152 GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card

I'm going to connect my 1080p LCD TV to the graphics card via the HDMI port.

My question is: will this play all of my 1080p content?

Well i have a amd x2 5600+ clocked at 3.249ghz and it cant handle all 1080p content. It plays 95% perfect but there are a few cases of high bitrate movies 1920x1080 with no black bars that cripple the framerate. The bird scene is a no go at 17-21fps And im using the linux build. From what i hear it utilizes duel core decoding more efficiently than the windows build. I could be wrong on this.

My advise is to go for an intel chipset with a E8400 3ghz. it will play 99.9% of 1080p content. Remember clock for clock intel outperforms amd easily.
