i'm wondering how to make xbmc play .rmvb video files?

i've read some posts about adding a codec, but since i know nearly nothing about this it didn't help me much.
so i'm hoping some kind soul would like to help me with a step by step 'manual' on how to do this.

(i'm using the 2003-12-08 build of xbmc)
