I'm thinking of following the excellent Lifehacker tutorial for producing an XBMC-based device from an Acer Revo:

I have some additional questions:

1. Can I add an optical drive (USB or firewire)?
   
2. Is the 1GB model really sufficient to decode HD content? How about Blu-ray content from the aforementioned optical drive?
   
3. Is there a comparable product which includes an optical drive and for which a tutorial for noobs (similar to the Lifehacker one mentioned above) exists?
   
4. Is the HDMI output of a high enough quality to support my "hd-ready" projector?

Thanks for the lightning fast response! I've looked at the ION 330 in the past and it looks fantastic. My issues are:

• I need a tutorial along the same lines as the Lifehacker one (as I mentioned above).
  
• I'd like to be sure of support for a remote control at the same level as the Revo.

there are several tutorials for minimal ubuntu and xbmc or xbmc live.

lirc or eventghost is supporting loads of remotes
