WMC as the backend - released
(2013-11-25, 21:00)spaceboy Wrote: pm sent. you are correct, i need the stutter fixing before i can really consider this as a replacement for wmc, but i'm hopeful that will be done and trying to resolve any other problems in the meantime.

so i think i asked before, but not sure what the answer was; as everything is being remuxed to ts now, what is the chance of slipping in something to transcode on the fly so that full hd could be reduced to 720p/

I PM'd you a like to the fix.

The remuxing to ts is really just a change of package, no changing of the actual data. Transcoding to a new format is a lot more complicated. However, I don't know of a reason why the server could not start a 3rd party transcoder and point the client to its output, so I'd say its possible.

pointless played all the way through so that change looks like it did the job, thanks!

i honestly think transcoding is necessary for adequate playback on the pi, when i used the dvblink xbmc pvr plugin previously i couldn't get smooth live tv hd playback on the pi. it just seems that it cannot handle 1080 as a live stream, local media is ok but not a live stream (just my observations)

i wonder whether i can also promote transcoding as an alternative solution to having the ts stutter problem fixed. i know dvblink uses ffmpeg to transcode streams on the fly to any client that requests it and i don't believe i saw the stutter in the transcoded streams in xbmc so i guess whatever format it uses doesn't have the same issues?

anyway, thats my lobbying done! do you have a list of feature requests that i could put it on?
Even though I see your point regarding the ts stutter problem I still think we need to somehow pinch the developers to pick up on that bug!

Transcoding (indeed like DVBLink does, on the fly) could be an option for less capable hardware. But it should not be a workaround for an XBMC bug.

Now there is a subsection voor WMC pvr, a thread dedicated to feature requests would be nice!

I started a Feature Request thread. I will make it a sticky if it catches on.

I have both licenses correctly installed, e.g. vcgencmd codec_enabled MPG2 comesback enabled and same for wvc1.

Any ideas?

I assume you only have this problem on the pi and not on the windows client, right? I have heard that there is a bug with the pi playing large wtv files. As an experiment to test if that's whats going on: in the 'debug' tab turn on 'remux the playback of all wtv files' and see if playback works.

I'm seeing the same issue on my RPI. The debug transcode workaround does display it, but then you loose the ability to seek since the transcode is going on the fly and the overall program length isn't fully set. @Krusty, you're saying this is an XBMC issue? I'm running on Gotham Alpha 10 build from MillhouseVH

I'm noticing that Radio channels from my provider aren't being properly categorized. They're lumped in with the video channels and when I try to play them I get the error that no video is found (because they're radio channels) is there a way to manually tag them as radio channels and not TV channels?

I'm saying its an issue with xbmc on the pi, when it plays a large a large wtv file. There is a pointer to a thread specific to this problem somewhere in this giant thread (pretty sure it was posted by Dilligaf if you want to do a search). It was a link to an pi forum I believe. The remux-to-ts is just a workaround. The remux on the fly is pretty quick, but you are right that if you want to start seeking right away it won't have data to work with.

I have not looked into anything with radio so far in this addon. However if these radio channels are coming over as tv channels you should be able to play them and not get an error. Please try to start one of these channels and then send me a link to the server log after it fails.

Wanted to thank you first of all for the work you put in to this most excellent plugin! I've been waiting for something like this for a while. This is the first time I've used live TV in xbmc, so I have a couple questions that I'm not sure are related to your plugin or xbmc PVR integration.
Sorry if these have been answered but I haven't read through this whole thread yet.

1. If I am watching TV and flip back to the EPG, but decide I don't want to tune a new channel, is there a one click method of going back to what's currently playing? As it is I have to bring the top menu down and scroll down to "fullscreen", 6 clicks. Hitting the back key on my harmony remote takes me to xbmc main menu.

2. Channel logos. I have my channel logos, they show in wmc but are not showing in xbmc live TV. Strangely they do show in xbmc TV settings.

3. When I click on a program it pops up a menu giving me choices to tune, record or cancel. Is there a setting that allows one click tuning? It wouldn't even be so bad if the default highlighted option was tune. As it is its 4 clicks to tune a channel.

Again thanks for your work on this. I can only imagine this getting better, though its pretty slick as it is. I would love to solely use Xbox for all my htpc needs, but for now I'll have to see how user friendly I can get live TV working. You know, the whole WAF and all that Smile
1) i have a FullScreen/Display command/keybind mapped to a button on my harmony remote. Not sure what keypress it is by default

2) I dont have channel logos so krusty or someone can hopefully help you

3) the PVR plugins arent in control of the UI and interface really. I agree that the PVR interface isnt that intuitive - There are a number of different XBMC skins that might provide different functionality though I havent tried them as I mostly focus on development.

Sorry the last 2 responses arent that helpful! Hopefully others can chime in

There is a setting you can put in advancedsettings.xml that will automatically tune the station when selected (in order to record/see info you will have to right click) unfortunately I can't remember what it is, I will update if I can find it.

Found it http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=advancedsett...#.3Cpvr.3E

<showepginfoonselect>true</showepginfoonselect> <!-- When selecting an EPG fileitem, show the EPG info dialog if this setting is true. Start playback on the selected channel if false. -->
If I have been of help, please add to my reputation as a way of saying thanks, it's free.

The XBMC team, plug-in devs, skinners, etc. do this for us for FREE in their spare time because they want to. Think about that for a second before you start bitching...

Thanks for all the quick replies, guys. I'll check into all this when I get command of the remote again Big Grin I'm using nox right now. I had no idea that these features would be skin related. I'll definitely dig into this more as soon as I can. I've pretty much only used stock skin. I recently just set up nox, just this week. Maybe there are some skins centered around pvr?

One more quickie... What are the chances that the channel change time will get shorter in future releases? It's about double wmc, which really doesn't bother me, but you know.

Thanks
I'm using Nox for a skin with MyChannelLogos for logos in WMC and my logos do display so it shouldn't be a skin issue. The weakest part of Nox is the PVR section but it shouldn't be causing any issues. I have tested a couple skins that do not support the logos which is why I asked. Means we need to look a little farther. Is your server and client the same machine? (Meaning does WMC / ServerWMC / XBMC all run on the same box?)

bandook, we are getting to the point where we cant make much more sweeping improvements to the channel change time in the backend. If you have a look at your ServerWMC log, for the OpenLiveRequest completion it will say how long it took. Typically the backend is only a couple of seconds and due to diminishing returns even if we focus large efort on trying to bring these down more, it will have less effect on the overall 5 second+ time.

The problem is that XBMC then has to analyze the stream and start to display it etc, which is another few seconds or longer depending on network/hard drive, how long it needs to analyse the TS file to detect the audio/video streams etc. Margro had a custom build of XBMC that sped up the ffmpeg detection of streams etc which is something you could look into if you want faster. They were trying to get it merged into gotham but not sure if it will be accepted. If you look at our calls in the backend ServerWMC log, you can let us know whether you think any of the times mentioned there seem like we could improve them - starting the recording, analysing the stream, remuxing the TS file. On my system this whole process is rarely more than 1- 2 seconds, but I can still have 4 - 8 second channel change time depending on network and XBMC itself

I would like to remind people that here is now a sub forum for WMCPVR. There really should be no need to post new issues here. It is too hard to track As far as the logo issue, I have a post on this in this thread. I will try and track it down and post it to the new forum,

It is also supposed to be in the wiki.
Wow, you guys are blowing me away with your willingness to help me. Thanks so much. I figured out the issue with logos. I had the other aeon skin, not NOx. Mq5? Anyways I switched to nox and all is well. When I get a chance I'll try some other skins and see if I can get happy. Yeah, no idea so much was skin dependent. So thank you!

Scarecrow, thanks. Really the times are good for me. 8 seconds isn't that bad at all. I'm not a surfer. More a Ron Popeil Big Grin . was just for my curiosity I asked. I'll check out the other thread now and not muddy this anymore.
