Switching the UPnP server to minidlna gives much better results both with Mezzmo and with the native Kodi UPnP support.
However, Mezzmo requests to enable the native Kodi UPnP support, otherwise it does not play anything.
And Mezzmo is unable to display photos (while it works with the native Kodi UPnP support).

Mezzmo doesn't require Kodi UPnP support, it is native UPnP support within the addon itself that is required.  This addon option being enabled allows Mezzmo users to only work with Mezzmo servers vs. discovering all UPnP servers.  In a network like mine where  I have 10-12 UPnP and DLNA servers  I sometimes like to turn off discovering the non-Mezzmo servers.   Also the addon prefers DLNA mode with HTTP vs. UPnP,  DLNA with HTTP is far more robust and the major servers out there like Plex, Jellyfin, Mezzmo and others prioritize DLNA / HTTP over basic UPnP.  

If you want me to look at why pictures aren't displaying I'll need a Kodi log with UPnP response enabled while you browse photos.   Of the three major media types (i.e. video, music and photos) photos are the least standardized and more often subject to tweaking between UPnP clients and servers.  You can see from the Wiki UPnP testing page some of the solutions where photo support has been tested and working.

Thanks for confirming the fix worked for installing the addon.  I'll include that with the next official release. 

Out of curiosity are you seeing the delays now when playing video using the minidlna server ?

Out of curiosity are you seeing the delays now when playing video using the minidlna server ?

There are no delays using minidlna, both the Kodi native UPnP support and with the Mezzmo addon.
