Good argumentation!
I understand to keep the GUI as simple as possible. For all platform cache size isn't a problem. So it makes sense to remove them. They are removed from XBOX aswell since platform compatability will result in more gains than having those settings easy accessible specific on the XBOX.

Feel free to make some skin hacks / plugins for this!

I recently upgraded and was annoyed to find the settings gone (this was a clean install due to the fact that my library wouldn't update anymore). When streaming from PlayOn over a wireless connection, you really need to boost the cache. I've always used 8192 for lan and internet, and video plays w/o interruption. With the default setting, it was play...pause...play...pause...

I get that someone could mess things up, but it seems like this is a pretty important setting (like, you can't play certain stuff w/o it), and should be in the UI under some Advanced Settings Use At Your Own Risk or something.

Unfortunately, It's gone and stays gone. See the comments Arnova made. Best hope is a plugin wich can be made available by Dan Dare.

I too feel the the same, as I needed to change cache sizes for certain things and now its a pain in the the hole to go changing advancedsettings.xml every time I want to get something working right.

At the moment the default cache settings for internet video streaming seems too low at 1024k when playing some vids on Navi-X for example. I don't think other platform users needs access to cahce settings as often but surely us xbox users need it considering the lack of ram.

Sorry guys,I really don't see the problem.
It's very easy to create an advancedsettings.xml and how many times do you set your cache settings....

For testing and fine tunning it's a lot easier to have it on the gui than to ftp.

You don't have to ftp. You can use the text editor script. But I agree, it's still easier on the gui.

@arnova
Any problems if I write a program plugin to allow customising the cache settings? Obviously if anyone wanting to shoot themselves in the foot they will have to use my gun :-)
#27
If Arnova gives his ok on this please add a reset to default button.

@xbs08
I already have a prototype started that relies on plugin settings (so I don't have to do the skinning and all that stuff) and yes a Use Defaults entry will be provided that will reset at least the entries maintained through the plugin. It will also only maintain some of the advanced settings, the most common ones (audio, video, cache).

Sure, go ahead. As long as you make clear what the cache settings are used for (which is mainly MPlayer only).

EDIT: It maybe an idea though to completely move them from CGUISettings to CAdvancedSettings which also fixes the "reset"-issue...
