Is Microsoft Media Center as a Backend even Possible?

Here's MythTV frontend/backend for windows:

I gave up looking for a MythTV distribution for Windows a year or two ago, and found this link over the past weekend.

I haven't tried it out yet, so I don't know how well it works.

lol download at that link is (here's that word again) rubbish lol Tongue i wouldn't waste my time with a port, unless it's rock solid.

Mediaportal is the only way to go for windows. Fortherecord Argus is not up to speed at the moment.

For the time being I think my best solution is to either just use Media Center (with extenders) or use XBMC and W7MC together. I have a Harmony One remote, so It it easy to jump back and forth between the two.

I am curious how you configured your harmony to switch back and forth between xbmc and wmc. I have been messing around with the various launcher add-ins with some mixed results so far.

here's what i do, using a standard HP Windows media center remote as shown here ---> http://www.collectibles-articles.com/ant...48817.html

I have my remote setup so that when the "green button" in the center of the remote is pushed, windows media center is launched.

i use Eventghost (Windows Application) and mapped that keypress to send a command to "close xbmc" when pushed. So when i push the button, XBMC closes, then wmc launches... This allows the GPU and CPU to be fully allocated to wmc.

i then used eventghost to map the button '0' on the remote to "close wmc, wait 3 seconds, then launch XBMC"

i wouldn't bother with "launcher" addons and all that crap. Using eventghost is the best way.

this allows me to quickly switch between the two apps flawlessly with the push of a single button.

you can then configure eventghost and map away the rest of your buttons to your choosing.

Although the remote works out of the box for XBMC, i like to use eventghost to map things the way i want.

once PVR development takes off and is almost fully featured, i'll be eliminating the need to use wmc all together because i HATE windows media center.

All i have to do then is "deactivate windows media center" services so wmc does not launch when the green button is pushed. That way i can use the green button for what ever i want.

:-)

Hey Loggio,

why don't u only use the Green Button for your switching purposes?
Eventghost is clever and you can set a macro:

Greenbutton press, wmc launch (if running xbmc kill), press again
if wmc running close, if not running xbmc run.

This sounds like a very good solution. Can you elaborate a bit more on how this is exactly setup? Is there a way to use if/then logic in eventghost?

Thanks!

I was going to set up a macro for the green button... I'm pretty sure I may have tried it at one stage but may have had problems, I can't remember...

Either way, thanks for reminding me... I'll have a look at doing that tonight.

cheers!

Loggio.

you want to "toggle" between apps... that is no problem it will just take a few extra steps.

look for App1
if it exists, Jump to CloseApp1Macro (set to not come back)
if it does not exist
look for App2
if it exists, close it
open App1

CloseApp1Macro:
look for App1
close it
open App2

Look for the functions find Window, and then use jumpmarks to trigger another macro.

For example try to find window called xbmc, then use the jumpmarks to trigger whatever if the window called xbmc couldn't be found and so on... just play a little bit around and read the hints for the functions.

I'm really close now, the only issue that I seem to have is WMC will not close when fullscreen. If I have WMC windowed, the toggle button I have set up works fine. XBMC switches okay either full screen or windowed.

Is there something that I am missing here regarding the window size?

Hi,

iam not sure but normally the keystroke "alt + enter" toggles between window and fullscreen, try to bring it to windowed mode first.
If your are using a mce remote (rc6) and add the mce plugin in eventghost then there should be a function to close wmc.

Open eventghost, then launch wmc in full screen, go to tasks and close.

Go to eventghost and on the left hand side it should have logged the event "exit ehome" or eshell or something along those lines. Drag and drop that event to your macro.

Do I want to Disable the HID service for the MCE remote plugin? If so, will this negatively affect XBMC's remote functions?

For whatever reason, I don't see any actions or functions in Eventghost for WMC. The only app even close is windows media player.

wouldn't it be easier in this case to start windows media center using something like advanced launcher and create a home menu item for the launcher and name it "Live TV" or something like that?

I know this reply is a little late but , I found this thread because i had the same idea as the OP.I love the live tv/pvr functionality of WMC7.
What I do, is have my HTPC boot directly to WMC then use this :

http://xbmcwmc.teknowebworks.com/

to load XBMC. If I want to go back to WMC I just shut down XBMC and it comes back. Works great and its super easy to set up.

I think this is an interesting solution.

I would like it though if instead of having to exit XBMC, there could be just a link like "Live TV" on the main menu that would just minimize XBMC and run WMC Live TV. Then once you are done with Live TV you hit the back arrow on your remote until XBMC pops back up.
