Release Philips Hue Service & Ambilight
Hello

The bridge detection should work, would you mind trying the bridge detection again but this time turn on logging and post them here? Detailed instructions on how to do this are here: https://kodi.wiki/view/Log_file/Easy

You can also do it manually as you've looked into but the logs might help me find and fix the problem for other users.

Since you've already found the settings.xml, here's an example of what the bridge IP line would look like. Just replace the IP with the correct one for your bridge:

xml:
<setting id="bridgeIP">192.168.1.50</setting>

The ambilight functionality in this addon is superb, however it's not so useful when people want to eat something while watching TV. Is there any way, (and if not, could something be added) to bind functionality to a custom remote keymap to toggle the ambilight "enable" option?
Reply
Glad you like it! There should be an option to disable or enable the addon if you open it through 'programs'. That said, binding it to a key is a good idea. I don't know if it's possible but I'll look into it for a future version

Great, thanks! Certainly with how I have the Kodi interface configured, getting to the add-on settings is more complex than I can reasonably expect other family members to cope with, so the button binding would be perfect.

I'd suggest making functions available for binding that can enable, disable and toggle the ambilight facility (depending on how many spare keys people have).

If you wanted to get fancy, maybe a function to recall a hue scene would be great for a variety of uses, such as manually dimming lights, but also even when not directly using Kodi.

A more advanced alternative to the last one would be a function to write a value to a custom sensor in the hue hub (and possibly Kodi playing state to another sensor). People could then create their own advanced automations just using rules on the hue hub.

Cheers!

Hi @doctorjames

I had a look through the kodi documentation and there might be a way to bind a toggle option to a key or remote button but aside from the code I'd have to add, users would have to modify xml files on their own for it to work. I've always had trouble with keymap files myself with kodi so I can only imagine average users. I found a pretty good alternative though that I setup on my own system.

It might require a couple button presses more but it should be very easy to use.

1) Install keymap editor addon from official kodi repo
2) Open the keymap editor addon from 'programs'
3) navigate to Edit -> Global -> Add-ons -> Launch Hue Service
4) Select Edit Key and press the remote or keyboard button you want
5) Press back until you see the 'save' button (Careful, cancel or esc or pressing back too many times won't save your change)
6) Press the key you selected, and you should then have easy access to the enable/disable shortcut, as well as options to trigger scenes manually, and open settings

I had a look at the sensors API on the hue bridge and I think it's also a use case that's really complex for most users, and it would be a lot of work. I've tried many hue apps and I haven't seen any that support creating rules based on sensors very easily. If someone contributed the code I'd add it but it's not something I have lots of time for. My next objectives will be to support Python 3 for Matrix,  the new settings system, and eventually get the addon added to the official Matrix repo.

Thanks for looking, and for your suggestion as to how to get to the addon options quickly and easily.

If you're interested at playing with sensors/rules, I've found "all 4 hue" on Android (seems available on iOS too) to be great for setting up those kinds of rules within the hue hub. Also I use simple python scripts with qhue as a way to easily set up repetitive or complex multi-state actions.

For kodi, I set up kodi-callback-daemon (https://github.com/pdf/kodi-callback-daemon) a few years ago now to write the playing/pause/idle state to a hue sensor. I also have a hue tap in the room which, when you press the bottom button, toggles a separate flag in the hub. If the flag is true, then the lights are automatically set to dimmed, mid-brightness or normal brightness scenes when the playing state sensor is updated. (In my use case I find having a simple physical button to press is easiest for anyone to understand, regardless of age/technical ability.)

It looks like you've got plenty of more widely desirable things to get on with and won't be bored!

Cheers.

@doctorjames, thanks for the info. I've used all4hue but didn't notice those options, I'll check it out. I'll play around with the sensors and rules and see how it works, it might be an interesting addition in the future after the other stuff.

I've been working on a version for python3/Matrix. Anyone who wants to try it out on Kodi 19 can install it manually from here: https://github.com/zim514/script.service...4.0-matrix

Weeeee I was hoping someone would bring this to matrix!!!! I'm so grateful to you.

Question though, when I install from the zip file it tells me failed to install dependencies, what am I missing?

Thanks!!!

Hi @HoMsEy

It's probably Rollbar, the crash reporting system that's missing. It's available here: https://github.com/zim514/zim514.github....0.15.1.zip

I'm having a blast with Kodi 18 on a Raspberry Pi with libreelec. I recently tried your Hue add-on and it worked great. I've set up some scenes to dim my lights when starting a movie, pausing it and so on.

Today I received my Philips Hue Play lights and I figured I'd give the ambilight feature in the add-on a try. It doesn't seem to work, I just get a white light behind my TV. It doesn't change color at all.

Is this a known issue on the Pi? (it's a Pi4) Or might this have something to do with Libreelec?

Things I've tried already:
- Disabling the other video actions
- Fiddling with the settings, to give the add-on more time to calculate the next color

Any ideas?

Ambilight works for me on Libreelec.

Im not using a Pi though but a HTPC.

Hi @marapuru,

Unfortunately ambilight doesn't work on certain hardware, like android and RPi. This is related to the hardware video decoding, it might work if you turn it off but your videos are probably going to be choppy.

Allright, I'll give the disabling of hardware acceleration a try and report back here. Btw I'm only streaming video content from my NAS, it's not streaming from a website or anything.

Not able to edit my last post. But I've tried to disable Hardware Acceleration in Kodi, to no avail. Even though the video's still render fine. The lights behind my TV only show a static white light.
