Release Kinos2 - Kodi 16.1 & Retroarch for Apple TV 1
#76
My VM-server stopped working a while ago and I haven't been found a real need to move the drives to a new server.... Anyways, I happened to have a copy of the install file on my desktop PC. I've updated the download link in the first post.
Looking back, I can't believe I made this. hahaha good times.
Cheers Smile

Postd in case anyone is looking up stuff regarding the 1st Gen ATV since info for it has been dried up.

Used Kinos2 again, this time on 2 different Crystal HD chips (BCM970012 & BCM970015) to test out MKV playback since OSMC struggled with playing the 1080P H.264 Blu-Ray backup. Didn't see any screentearing or stuttering on that same video in Kinos2, quite amazing what can be accomplished on discontinued hardware made in 2007 & with only 256MB RAM.
Only wish that the OSMC skin could be ported to Kinos2 as I find that to be easiser to use & more aesthetically pleasing, especially when the background image can be changed & set behind the blue overlay. Beyond that, this OS is the best way to make full use of the 1st Gen ATV since there's nothing else being made for it anymore

OSMC's skin is a little more integrated into osmc's services and quirks than usual skins, but it would probably would work fine if one were to edit out the osmc-specific things on the Jarvis-version of the OSMC skin. I think it's pretty light too, so it'll probably run fine on the ATV. If anyone wants to do it, then I have no problem including it. (my build server is back up and it'll be no problem making a new image).

Yes, I did optimize the sh*t out of that ATV, glad you enjoy it Smile (if the devs didn't rip out the chd code, which was never optimal in the first place, before Krypton, I think it would even run todays version of Kodi fine)

Question
Got a couple more questions, hope you don't mind them if you still know the in-and-outs of Kinos2.
Question 1: I migrated my videos from OSMC and intend to put them in Kinos2. However, there does not seem to be a network setting where I can change the IP address & get it so that it the ethernet cable can talk to the connected PC to transfer the files. Is there a way I can get it done? Figure that ethernet is the way to go to get the fastest speeds for file transfering and if the Apple TV's single USB port is being occupied by another device like a USB drive or hotspot for Wi-Fi.
Question 2: How would I make a custom
UI sound pack for Kinos2? Do the audio files need to have a specific format and bitrate?
Question 3: I noticed the video screensaver is absent from the repository list, is it simple to port it from OSMC or will that particular feature eat too much of the Apple TV's limited RAM? It would be nice if they seamlessly looped, especially at 1080P.

1. you can do that from the command line using connman. I’ve included a ncurses version just type connman then press tab. The ethernet port is only 100mbs so if you have a gigabit usb/eth adapter of usb wifi adapter it can go faster (you wont get giganet speeds since the usb port is only usb2, maybe up to 300-500mbs)

2. just cd into where the sounds are located. It’s probably inside /usr/share/kodi.

3. i’ve never used it, and it’s probably something I just forgot to include, or maybe I thought noone would use it. Should be easy to include. My guess is that you can’t simply copy it over from OSMC, maybe I can look into it after I get back from vacay, but that’s at least 2 months from now.

Sorry to post more questions but I've been having trouble trying to install Kinos2 on another 1st Gen Apple TV I got.
The main problem is that the installation stops with the message that says No boot/recovery files found. It went through my internal drive by first partitioning it, then formatting the Recovery partition, making the swap partition, formatting the Kinos partition, and mounting all the partitions, basically how a typical install of Kinos2 should work.
When it came to mounting the partitions, it threw an Error (sdb2) with sda1 & sda3 being fine along with sdb1.

Here's some notes on my procedures:
- I wrote the Kinos2 image to my 4GB USB Drive via USB image writer on Linux. I don't think either the program or USB device are at fault because I was able to install the OS on a bigger mSATA SSD that had no data in it.
- The mSATA SSD I tried to install it on still gets detected on my Linux PC so I don't think its defective, especially as it used to have OSMC on it.
- Going back to the USB device containing the installer, when the process halts due to a failure, it looks different when I plug it in the Linux PC. By that, I mean it no longer has only one partition with the tar file inside it but Kinos & Recovery.

Should I try to clone a HDD/mSATA that has Kinos2 working successfully to the target hard drive that couldn't get the OS to work? Would it be OK if that HDD/mSATA being cloned is smaller than the target device? For instance, Apple's 40GB IDE HDD being cloned to a 128GB mSATA SSD.
Can't seem to figure out what the problem(s) are that are preventing me from installations.

Update
I don't exactly know why I got that error message earlier, but I was able to get kinos2 installed on the mSATA SSDs by cloning the data from a 40GB IDE HDD that originally came with the Apple TV to them.
So far, I've not encountered any issues on the Apple TVs or SSDs with the cloned data. All of them connect to the network to scrape data with no issues. Ignore my previous post, the clone workaround solved the problem.

I'm amazed at how Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike & JoJo's Bizzare Adventure played smoothly with the mSATA SSD. It remains to be seen though about connecting multiple controllers to the Apple TV via USB. Would think a USB hub plugged in the back of the ATV wouldn't be much of an issue to read many controllers for multiplayer, haven't tried Bluetooth yet.

Only minor complaint is that subtitles on a ripped Blu-Ray won't load whatsoever, as opposed to SRT subtitles on DVD rips working without a fuss. Sure, subtitles can be downloaded & while they do work, it's sometimes hard to determine which one correctly matches the media being played & if its the same language, doesn't go out of sync.

I’ve just installed Kinos2 on my Apple TV, looks very nice, pretty responsive also, thank you.
When I using OSMC, I was able to use the cyberduck App to ssh my mkv files to the HDD, their username was OSMC and Password Was also OSMC, I’ve read through this thread and I can’t seem to find anywhere that mentions what the username is, only that the password is atv, can anyone please post both the username and password? Thank you for your time everyone.

Hi Soli!

Hi everyone

Soli, thanks for reuploading the Kinos 2 image file. I've sucessfully updated my ATV1 to 1TB msata storage :-)

It's great to see this forum alive and that your work saved so many ATV1'nes from landfill, being so useful almost 20 years after launch!
Thanks for all the effort tuning the software to work flawlessly and glad to know it was good times building it.

I take it to a country shed where internet connection is poor and it's great for offline watching fullHD movies and listening to high-res music as my own vinyl rips.
I've managed to install mpd and, using an iOS app, i can remotely control the music being played.
With a good'ol Apple iPod Hi-Fi speaker connected via toslink cable, it plays audio in high quality and as Kinos features shairport, it can also play high-quality airplay streams, turning the ATV1-iPodHiFi combo into an old HomePod lol
Also, when idle, I can disable Kodi and the ATV1 acts as a torrent and AdGuard server.
And with ngrok I can access ATV1 from anywhere.

I have a couple of questions Big Grin
I also use Kinos to tinker with linux but I really cant find where is the Kinos install script. Mounted the USB install stick but I can't find it.
I'd to like to test some ideas, like reinstalling without wiping the entire disk.
Can you tell me where it is located?

One thing that I could'nt do is to install Tizonia, a command line web player, useful for listening to Tidal, Spotfy streams...
It'd be a nice addition to ATV1 but Tizonia needs newer packages unavailable in Ubuntu 14, on which Kinos is based.

Thanks again buddy

Have some more thoughts with Kinos2

- When I installed a non-English language for the UI, the Default font broke the text and made most things invisible until I change the font setting to Arial-based. I assume it would be possible to change/add fonts in a similar manner to OSMC where a XML file had to be modified to point at the location of said fonts or there's an easier method.

- Besides the CPS & Neo-Geo games, most of the other emulated platforms give pretty good performances. Since MS-DOS is an option via DOSBOX, I wonder how Windows 95 would fare on the Apple TV 1st gen. I have doubts it will run 3D voodoo games like LEGO Island or Unreal Tournament smoothly, but it would be neat if they were playable on limited Intel hardware. Perhaps Windows 95 will run fine if it has the updates & patches installed.

- To add more onto DOS, I also wonder how well the DOS port of Super Mario 64 runs on the ATV being that it's a 3D game that is not ran on a N64 emulator but is from the SM64 decompilation project.

- I know its possible to have different custom sounds for certain skins, but would it be possible to have a looping ambient track play in the main menu? It would stop the moment the user wants to watch a video or listen to music.

- Given the availible color options for the default Kinos2 skin I would also assume it's possible to make different colors like a hypothetical green Kinos2 theme.

- Would it also be possible to make an animated background for the Kinos2 menu? It wouldn't have to be a video that plays on loop as I imagine it eats up more of the ATV's RAM, instead it would be a seamless animated GIF. To get an idea of how it would work and some possible designs, look at some Geocities & Neocities pages.

- Ethernet works great when I need to download updates or artworks for various media files. Since the Broadcomm Wi-Fi chips usually get swapped for a Crystal HD chip, it's good to know that whether the ATV is connected to a router or a phone via a USB ethernet adapter, the unit will still talk to the internet without the Wi-Fi chip. It also leaves the USB port open for other things to be inserted.

Giving out some updates to what I posted earlier.

Quote:- I assume it would be possible to change/add fonts in a similar manner to OSMC where a XML file had to be modified to point at the location of said fonts or there's an easier method.

The method is still the same as OSMC's as it would not detect the new fonts I put in.
For those that want to change the UI menu font, follow the folder path below...
Kinos > home > .kodi > addons > skin.quartz.ce > 1080i

Then open the Font.xml file in your notepad or other text document viewer, replacing the instances of arial.ttf to your font of choice. Since there's some bold style variables, make sure your font has a bold version, then replace arial.ttf with the bold version of your font.

It's much easier to have different fonts to choose for subtitles. Let's say you wanted to watch a movie with the subtitles set to Comic Sans, you would just simply go to the following path...

Kinos > usr > share > kodi > media > Fonts

And put your Comic Sans font there. (Might need root/admin access on the PC reading those folders in the Kinos HDD as I wasn't able to insert the fonts normally)

The subtitle font option doesn't seem to group the regular, bold, and italics variables all together, but instead run with that one font selected. So if that font is bold, your subtitles will always be bold and if that font is regular then the subtitles will always output text in the standard way without all the bells & whistles.
Unfortunately, it applies to all the movies you watch & there doesn't appear to be an option to only have certain movies output the specific font for subtitles. It would be a nice QoL feature to have where we could use Comic Sans or a similarly designed font for animated movies & cartoons while we would use Arial or another similar font for non-animated movies. Maybe go a step beyond & extend it to languages having their own fonts.

Quote: - I also wonder how well the DOS port of Super Mario 64 runs on the ATV being that it's a 3D game that is not ran on a N64 emulator but is from the SM64 decompilation project.

It loaded fine, but the framerate was very slow. I didn't go any further into the game, and I'm not quite sure the other 3D games I mentioned earlier will play nice either even if the configs were set to give it more memory. It still remains to be seen if the Windows 95 OS itself will run decently enough.
