Best Kodi Media Player Options 2025
Are there any alternatives now for the Ugoos AM6b+ for local DV FEL playback? I want smooth DV FEL playback without A/V sync issues from local network playback. Everything else is not important.
Reply
A handful of Dolby-licensed S905X4 (-J or -K) boxes; see post #1 or visit CoreELEC forum's Hardware section.
Reply
So S905X4 is actually usable for local playback? I just read many people saying that only the S922X version is good.
Reply
S922X is a bit snappier (more so navigating larger local media libraries), but S905X4 is quite capable as well, and can play AV1 codec which S922X can't.

this is first boot, haven't tried anything at all, just wanted to see if i could

initially i used the am8 and gave up due to limited interest and time
once i checked the uart while trying it was pretty obvious why it wasn't working

Code:
      dtb 0 soc: s5   plat: s928x    vari: AM8-4g
      dtb 1 soc: s5   plat: s928x    vari: AM8-8g

just needed to be more persistent, the added information of what it wanted was helpful

-----

ce crashed the first video i tried to load and i haven't tried again
now that i have a root shell on the device (through ce) i should be able to pull a proper dtb which will likely help that, if not then time to debug everything with the logs

in any case, another device for ce is a good thing and this one has good hardware specs

How is the 3rd gen Fire TV Cube with KODI please?

I'm after an easy to use device that can be driven over HDMI-CEC via a standard tv remote (or the tv can be controlled using the device remote).  The Fire TV Cube is on half-price sale for $109 Australian Dollars and looks like it *should* be a good enough device for streaming FROM my NAS, over the internet to my parent's device.  They won't care about Dolby Vision or audio.  AV1 hardware decoding may be useful as I'm seeing more AV1 encoded files available online (generally I encode all my stuff to HEVC).

I've been using an Intel N100 mini PC for most of this year (made my own HDMI-CEC to USB adapter so my LG tv remote controls KODI) and I'm extremely happy with it, but buying similar would cost around $200 AUD (I also use it for retro gaming on the tv, I do audio pass through to my soundbar, I'm happy with HDR10 playback for DV encoded files as *I* cannot tell any difference on my 2021 LG OLED).  I'm searching to see if there are any known issues with the Fire TV Cube, but most mention the 1st of 2nd gen.  Thank you.

This might be interesting since I asked a similar thing recently: https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid...pid3217642

This MAY become my favorite media player since it supports everything I have.  I have a lot of my favorite Blue-Ray rips that are encoded with that pesky VC-1, and this is the only media player that "NATIVELY" plays that codec with hardware decoding.

Hi clarkss12, since you have the True V box, I wanted to ask you if there is the problem of Dolby audio (AC3 and E-AC3 make audio out of sync, but TrueHD works properly) out of sync about 100-175 ms compared to video on CoreELEC/Kodi system?

The devices that have this problem are as follows:
  • Ugoos AM6B Plus under CoreELEC-NG with DV FEL
  • Nvidia Shield TV PRO 2019 under Kodi Omega 21.1
  • Homatics Box R 4K Plus under CoreELEC-NG

My current Audio Passthrough settings on Kodi is:

Dolby Digital (AC3) capable receiver - On
  - Enable Dolby Digital (AC3) transcoding - Off
Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC3) capable receiver - On
TrueHD capable receiver - On
DTS capable receiver - Off
DTS-HD capable receiver - Off

They have the problem of Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus (AC3 and E-AC3) audio doing out of sync about 125-200 ms compared to video but all this happens when AC3 and E-AC3 capable receiver is enabled, that means passing audio without conversion on Kodi/CoreELEC. When I tried to disable AC3 and E-AC3 capable receiver, that means the output of PCM audio which solves the out-of-sync audio problems.
TrueHD works properly with TrueHD capable receiver enabled.

I attach the screenshot with AC3 and E-AC3 capable receiver enabled where you can see the audio out of sync late compared to the video:
https://postimg.cc/8fGLPwh8

And AC3 and E-AC3 capable receiver disabled, that seems ok:
https://postimg.cc/8sGyCbkP

I did not understand why. I don't know if it is a problem with the devices or it is simply a bug in Kodi.
My TV is LG C2, that supports all Dolby audio codecs.

That said, I would be curious to know is the same out-of-sync audio problem there for Vero V on OSMC.

Thank you

I either own or have owned all three of the boxes you mentioned. None of them has ever given me audio sync issues with AC3 or E-AC3 content in passthrough under Kodi / CoreElec v21.

I have an LG G3 but my devices are always connected to the AVR rather than the TV directly.

Do you have an AVR? If so is the AVR reporting an LPCM signal or DD/DD+ signal? As in is the LG doing passthrough or is it decoding to LPCM? Have you tried connecting directly to the AVR rather than the TV?

No, I don't have an AVR.

If I set AC3/E-AC3 in passthrough on CoreELEC/Kodi, the LG TV is reporting a Dolby Audio signal. If instead AC3/E-AC3 in LPCM, the LG TV reporting a PCM signal.

Do you think it's a TV problem? Would the AVR handle audio better?

My first question is WHY so many dropped and skipped frames?  In my experience, I can always tell if I am dropping or skipping frames, by the lip-sync issue.  What does your mediainfo say about that file?
Reply
Related to your first question, it's because I went back and forth a lot to find an all-black frame (to avoid any copyright issues).

The lip-sync issue is not necessarily connected to dropped or skipped frames, at least in my case.

Even with zero frame drops, I've always experienced a misalignment between the lip movement and the sound.

The mediainfo of the file says the following:

In any case, I don't understand what is causing the audio to be out of sync.

That's why I'm curious to know if it also happens on the box Vero V.

I have been checking some of my BlueRay media and I can match the video codec, but can't find one with DD+.  Your mediainfo shows Audio #2, what is your audio #1?  I am trying to find a video that matches your video so I can compare apples to apples.

you're not likely to find any bluray that has EAC3, this format is more common of "alternate" media sources

best case, find a sample that you both can test for an apples to apples - https://kodi.wiki/view/Samples

The Audio #1 because it was from another language, it's the same codec and bitrate as the Audio #2 one so I removed it to shorten the mediainfo and make it more readable.

As the @izprtxqkft says, it is not so easy to be E-AC3 in BluRays however there are some discs that contain AC3/E-AC3 audio as secondary or of a non-original language, not always.

Thanks @izprtxqkft for sharing the link for samples.

Among the trailers, I found one that may suit our case for testing. I can't find a trailer with E-AC3 but I found one with AC3 that may work as a test.

Trailer 1 1920×804 AVC YUV420 8 bit DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, AC3 5.1 MKV
Download: https://we.tl/t-yXTa8n0hrw
source: https://thedigitaltheater.com/argylle-2024/

I tested it on Ugoos AM6B Plus with CoreELEC-NG and it is out of sync between about 75-100 ms.

PS: If you download that link, remember to select AC3 audio instead of DTS-HD MA.
