Would like to use it for / I want:

- play 1080p within XBMC
- play 3D movies
- bluetooth (can be dongle, but need a free usb for usb-stick)
- airplay
- lan
- skype

A few options:
YW9300 Samsung Exynos 4412
Udroid u2
Ouya

Things I haven't considered?

If you want a trouble free experience, I would double your budget and go for x86. Especially upcoming kabini's look great.

Airplay is in your list, but it doesn't work on Android http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=165627
XBMC.MyLibrary (add anything to the library)
ForTheLibrary (Argus TV & XBMC Library PVR Integration)
SageTV & XBMC PVR Integration

I'd second this. Look at the Intel NUC also -- it's the size of an Apple TV and also a real computer. And, it should get a Haswell refresh in a couple of months.

If you're set on Android, I'd wait for the refresh there also: ETA 1-6 months. It sounds like Pivos is in line to use a next gen processor and others should as well.

Everything else currently shipping (Android) is using a last-generation chipset, including the Ouya. And, XBMC Android is still in alpha and not officially released. It's not smooth sailing yet.

I thought Tegra 3 was top of the line together with exynos 4412 but that doesn't seem to be the case. Which chipsets are on the way and would the pricerange (in 1-6 months time) for these new chipsets be about the same as the last-generation chipsets are now? These android boxes are so attractive, partly because of the price (compared to x86).
I get a lot of warnings (not only on this thread) that android isn't ready for all of my demands yet. I thought that buying a last-generation chipset-android-box now is not a waste of money, because development will continue so that in a couple of months these very boxes are up to the job. Am I wrong?

And how about windows and x86/x64, last time I checked (that has been a while) 3D video playing wasn't possible on nettops for a reasonable price.

Yes, but that means trippling his budget.

Yes and not just xbmc on android; the whole android ecosysyem needs to mature on hardware acc. Video playback.
