Out of interest, the people that have 10TB and higher storage - what do you use to store them?

I have 2 4TB HDs, 1x1.5 TB HD, and a 500GB HD. It's all stored in my Fractal Design Define R4 HTPC Gaming case. I use my gaming PC for HTPC Storage, Gaming, and Live TV. It's basically what I had always dreamed I could do with my Xbox 360 but couldn't.

It's a shame M$ couldn't give a damn less about us Windows Media Center uses as they cut support in the Xbox One. IT would have been a good way to push the platorm forward, but I guess they just simply don't care.

I'll soon have a dedicated storage PC running Linux so I can use some other program for my TV Backend. Right now, I'm having areally hard time setting up Media Portal and I'm hoping something else works well. WMC really isn't what I wanna be stuck with forever.

I wish I knew how safe UseNets are. I can never seem to find any recent posts about them. Torrenting hasn't gone well for me recently even with safety measures lol.

I have been on Usenet for 4+ years without 1 incident (knock on wood) I use SSL to my provider (Astraweb) and am very happy with the service. Since the death of nzbmatrix I run my own newznab so I am self contained.

I have multiple friends that use torrents that get letters from their ISP saying things like we see you doing X and if you dont stop we will shut off your service.

Ya, I guess I'll have to try out UseNets when I'm on my own making my own money. At the moment still with parents and don't want to receive a letter after I've DLed 2-4 TBs straight as at that point I'd probably receive 5-10 straight.
My fraternity house has received like 50 of those letters, I'm surprised they still have internet (I graduated).

Aeon MQ4 tells you when you are on the main menu for movies or TV shows, not sure of any other skin.
If memory serves me right, i have about ~600 movies and ~30 TV shows with ~600 episodes total. only taking up about 2TB of space i recently built my first HTPC so my collection is rather low considering I've had it for a few months.

Just over 1200 Movies and 101 TV-Shows with about 8000eps i believe.
All in 720p or 1080p. Taking up about 11.8TB storage out of the net 22TB i have.

Perhaps this topic would be more usefull if we tell a little but about how we store this and what our experiences are with XBMC handling large libraries.

I run this on a FreeBSD environment using ZFS pools of 8x 1.5TB and 8x 2TB SATA disks. No issues so far and good performance (600MB/sec Single file read )

Since scanning for new content started taking a fair amount of time, I did recently move all ended TV-Shows and 2012 and older movies to archive directories. These are scanned once by XBMC but left alone after that as no new content is added to them. This really sped up the media scan

Ya like said, some skins display these stats. I used to use Aeon Nox and saw it alot. I dunno if it's even on Ace. I like having the stats as well as the how many I've watched stats.

I've actually started to resort to ripping my own TV shows with a Ceton InifiniTV4. I just need to get VideoRedo soon.

Without going into details here Usenet after taking a few simple steps can be incredibly reliable and very cheap.
How safe it is I couldn't comment on, with SSL enabled and unless your isp has deep packet inspection they shouldn't be able to tell what you're downloading but they sure as hell can see you're downloading an awful lot of data.

Your Guess is just that... a guess and in a way is a backhanded slap at those who keep home theatres. There are other options, like buying and reselling, or renting and ripping or in some cases just keeping a high quality collection of trailers and of course there is broadcast OTA collections, and in some case large personal video collections.

Given As of Monday, September 30, 2013 IMDb had 2,650,400 titles (includes episodes) for most, this amount of anything would be not only impractical but very expensive. I suspect that most XBMC movie collections contain personal interests and given the structure of XBMC are limited to best, highly rated, genre, language or otherwise material hard to get from local sources. Once you realize your collection will never be complete, and the impossibility of ever viewing this amount of content and the rapid evolving digital standards (4K is almost here, but friends in the industry suggest 8k will be the ultimate eventuality) I don;'t think the word hoarding is apt and enters the world of the collector, a discriminating finely tuned appetite for personal individuality that has a vision of a future that may preclude present freedoms that we enjoy now.

I note that Kaleidescape Movie Collections now allows their equipment to download to hard drive a HD quality violet copy of any movie for $2 of which the original is currently inserted. This offering indicates that some agreement between producers and users has been finalized should that equipment be utilized.

I haven't seen prices like that around here... but I probably don't look hard enough. Most of the time they want $5 a piece... so I don't bother haggling.

I do get that people buy tons of DVDs and Blu-rays and how people can get such large collections... just look at some of the people on the Blu-ray forums.

I don't know what this was about There was no intentional or unintentional insult in my statement regarding home theatre aficionados, not sure where you were going.

I probably should have made it a two-part question.

I simply asked if most of the people posting about their massive collections are collecting their content through 'legitimate' sources or through usenets, torrents, etc. There was a lot of posts regarding usenets and torrents etc, and was wondering how many people here are collecting their content through "more legal" means... such as physical and other services (digital copies, subscription, etc.).

This leads to the second part, of whether the access leads to collecting for collecting sake and not for consumption. Sure hoarding is an imprecise word, but it gets across what I was trying to convey. Two members already posted about this on the first page. They have either collected content (movies or television shows) that they don't even like or to purposely grow their collection to see the number grow. All I was wondering was whether this is common and more prevalent if one has access to "free" content, compared to those who obtain in more "legal" ways. The statement on the first page reminded me of the P2P/napster(specifically mentioned) days when people did this all the time.

Well I don't collect for hoarding's sake. I see a movie I think I would like (based on a number of factors including reviews, peer opinion, genre, style, director, actors etc) and I try and get a copy.

I have found though that I obtain more than I watch, leading me to sometimes almost wish for a prolonged bedridden illness so I can catch up. (not really but you know what I mean - being self employed I get my major vacation during summer (xmas-new year) when the country closes down. But summer is hardly conducive to lying in bed watching TV!)

It's a dilemma, but I'll catch up sometime.

I collect movies based on reviews and personal taste, definitely do not hoard. I know some people just want to have every single movie they can get their hands on which is fine but I see no point in that considering i'll probably never watch it anyways. I research the movie and if it sounds like something i would like or just have good reviews then i'll get it which explains why my collection is miniscule compared to some.

Used to have over 1600 movies, and 10,000 episodes along with best part of 50,000 audio tracks.

Right now, XBMC reports 43 movies, 17 shows (822 episodes) and 5041 tracks. Have got a fair bit all ready to add in to the library, but will still be minuscule compared to what I used to have. Took me years to build up my previous collection, but well on the way to starting again.

My guess is a quality upgrade and probably more selective as well.

No one has really mentioned WHERE these stats are displayed on the screen.

Using Refocus BIG here, and I have the RSS Ticker turned off. This data appears in that area. When Videos is highlighted it shows total number of movies and TV Episodes. When highlighted over Movies or TV Shows it shows how many total of that section and how many unwatched.

Don't remember mine right now. All I know is that I finally fixed my WISP and been using 80Gigs/month. Retard tech that came out and "set it up" had put my wireless router on the same channel as the WISP antenna. So every time I got on the internet and my router kicked out a signal it knocked the internet out... Hate it when country folk try to mess with tech stuff. Just go shoot a deer or something.
