there isn't really a "best" -- really depends on how much local storage you think you'll need for OE/XBMC. I stream everything off my NAS, so 1GB would be enough for me.

seems like about 20% (number pulled straight from my butt) of people run into this issue with the OpenELEC dual boot option, and I've been unable to determine the cause. For almost all of them, performing a factory reset as described in section 1.3 of the wiki, followed by a full re-install of OpenELEC, seems to fix the issue. I have no idea what's different the 2nd time, or why a reset clears up the issue.

Seems like I'm one of the "20%". Sad

Guess that'll all have to wait till tomorrow now.

so just do a factory reset and try again

Doing it now. Had some other stuff to do, but I guess I can do that tomorrow instead. Should have another 2-3 hours to tinker today, before I really have to do some other stuff. It's still creating the recovery stick. Takes for ages.

Edit: Seems to have worked! Booted into OpenELEC ok.

I am trying restore the stock firmware so that I can install version 2014-06-20 -- v2.11. The firmware I am using is 2014-06-06 -- v2.7 i have the issue with a black boot screen. I have tried pressing the reset button but the box keeps booting in to XBMC. I have tried the Ctrl D option during boot up but again it boots directly into XBMC.

I need help to get back to ChromeOS so that I can reinstall.

Thoughts??

you should be pressing escape to bring up the boot menu and select the chromiumos usb stick.

see below, you'll just need to blindly boot the ChromiumOS USB stick by hitting ESC then 2. I'd power on, then just hit ESC, 2, short pause, and repeat the sequence until you get it to work. But there's no reason to restore the stock firmware to update. Just re-run the script from ChromiumOS and install the latest version,

right, he just has to do it blindly since he doesn't have the boot menu visible

I got in to chromiumos I have done these steps:

Hit CTRL-ALT-F2 to get to command prompt
Login with user chronos (no password required)

but when i run the command get the command curl -L -O http://goo.gl/3Tfu5W

I get:

curl: (6) couldn't resolve host 'goo.gl'

as with ChromeOS, you need to ensure networking is set up (eg, connect to wifi) on the initial ChromiumOS screen before switching over to the shell prompt. You can hit CTRL-ALT-F1 to get back there.

I have just purchased Asus Chromebox core i3 (4GB RAM + 16GB SSD) and plan to customize it to run OE/XBMC + ChromeOS (thanks to you Smile

)

I will also stream everything from my NAS but still, as I understand, XBMC maintains its library locally so if I keep OE/XBMC partition at a minimum of 1 to 2 GB, then will it be possible to set XBMC to maintain it's library on the external SSD (bought and inserted additionally)?

XBMC will maintain its library database locally, but 1 or 2GB is plenty of local storage if all your media will be external. You can have XBMC use an external database, but there's no need here unless you want multiple XBMC clients to use the same database

This might be the wrong place or not allowed, if so my apologies but figured people looking at this thread might be interested.

I bought a brand new i3 Intel chromebox (M075U) and installed Openelec with Matt's awesome script. However I use a few addons which appear to make the hardware unstable (Boblight). The plugin will stop responding or cause the box to hang at launch or reboot. It appears to be fine without this addon enabled.

Would anyone be interested in purchasing this chromebox, with the firmware already updated and openelec installed?

I followed the instructions and everything seemed to work until I was trying to load Openelec from USB. It starts up and I hit ESC to enter the boot menu, then I select the USB drive and hit enter. The monitor then goes to inactive and turns off, leaving the chromebox running, but not doing anything.

Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong?

sounds like there's an issue with your USB installation media. Can you try using another USB stick? Just download the latest OpenELEC, extract, and run their create installstick utility. For best results, make sure your USB device has a single FAT32 partition on it.

Matt, I'm just wondering...does the coreboot firmware have some sort of code restricting windows 7 from being installed? I'm looking at finding a stop-gap solution for the box until Intel devs get something out. I am getting far too many issues with crashing* and video freezes.

*Incidentally, what I once assumed was a hard crash is actually dropping out to the console (ctrl-alt-f2) and a ctrl-alt-f1 will pull openelec back up...still this is a very strange issue that I don't see anyone else reporting.

Anyway, while I appreciate the currently available setup...I'm left wondering why (seemingly) nobody is working toward a functional windows installation. Is it even probable in your opinion? With so many driver issues under linux it seems like a logical progression.
