Working on it, thanks Matt. I hit Ctrl-Alt-F2 to get to the command prompt while ChromiumOS is loading, but when I try to login I get:

localhost login:

When I type "chronos" and enter it asks for password, I hit enter, and get

Login Incorrect

Any ideas?

try 'password' - it may have changed from nothing

Then, I loaded up the latest version of OpenElec via USB successfully. It boots to Openelec in moments now flawlessly.

Sadly -- I still have the HDMI audio issue. My Chromebox is passing video just fine, but no matter which Audio Device I select for output, it does not seem to want to pass HDMI audio. I tried two different cables on two different receivers / TV's with no luck.

Any users in here with advice, much appreciated.

I assume you have configured the audio output device and its capabilities via XBMC's settings? You may need/want to change the settings level to advanced or expert.

Chrome OS has no password. Chromium OS does, and it is 'password'

Could you be more specific about your settings, please? I have passthrough working perfectly, and would be glad to try and help but I need to know that you have set your machine up correctly. In addition, what type of receiver are you running? What is your setup (hdmi-receiver-tv)? The box most certainly supports passthrough as does the latest version of Openelec.

-Asus Chromebox with Intel Celeron and 2GB RAM, Firmware write protect screw removed.
-Known working/good HDMI cables (AmazonBasics) tested on working system
-HDMI into Onkyo TX-SR805 Receiver (Video out to projector) (Also tested HDMI out to TV)

Install Steps So Far
-Installed latest version (I think) of coreboot using Matt's tool for a standalone installation.
-Downloaded and installed OpenElec 4.0.6 on a good 4GB USB stick.
-Booted Chromebox to USB, installed OpenElec 4.0.6 to the 16GB Asus internal drive successfully on my test bench
-Booted OpenElec in my HTPC system environment, and

-Video out via HDMI works fine, audio out does not. Tried all devices listed, I think.

When you click the name of the HDMI audio device, it should show a list of all devices present, along with whatever they are connected to (eg, when connected to my TV, it shows 'Panasonic xxx' or similar). Does yours show something similar?

If that fails, it may be a cable issue even if it works with other devices

Tried powering up with receiver on. Video comes up immediately, but still no audio.

I've got a DisplayPort to HDMI cable arriving tomorrow (love Amazon Prime) to see if that works, and I'll try again with some other HDMI cables if that fails. Maybe I'll have more luck on the DisplayPort output.

OK, so I just tested the Chromebox hooked up directly to a TV in another room via HDMI, and the box detected it (Samsung) and output audio just fine over HDMI. So that rules out bad Chromebox hardware.

I then tested using the known working HDMI cable from above, and plugged it into my Onkyo receiver's HDMI input.

But, still no audio over that connection.

I have an older XBMC HTPC I am using that does play audio on this receiver, outputting mini DisplayPort to HDMI from an NVidia card on an older AMD Phenom box. I just tested it on the same receiver input and it works.

So, now I suspect it is an incompatibility in my Onkyo receiver's HDMI circuitry and this Chromebox's HDMI output. Not sure if there is a cheap fix for this other than hoping the Onkyo "likes" the output from the Chromebox DisplayPort for some reason. Oh well.

My whole goal here was to switch to an always on / lower power usage HTPC for my theater room and the Chromebox seemed like a good candidate.

Haven't given up yet, but doesn't look good for my old Onkyo. Thanks for the help guys. I love this stuff and have been an HTPC builder for over a decade, not sure why I just joined these forums now. :-)

Are you running a 2.0 speaker setup? Have you tried turning passthrough off? My Pioneer is recognized...but I'm using a 5.1 output. It seems like a cable issue though considering Onkyo isn't showing up...(handshake issue possibly?) It is only my opinion but you might as well do the audio processing "in house" if you will with Openelec, if you are only running 2 channels. Did you get sound under chromeOS?

edit: Just saw your post, handshake issue with onkyo for sure. Does your onkyo take firmware upgrades?

You know what, it totally does and I haven't tried to update it in years. Time to hit the Google to see if maybe the receiver has a firmware update! Good call, friend.
