XBMC for Windows, installer test, rev 12882
#61
Here's another thing I'm running into that is installer specific. Actually, it's uninstaller specific. Unless you grant yourself full access under Vista, the uninstaller does nothing. If you grant yourself full access, the folder and all the files go away, but, upon reinstallation, all the old settings persist. I'm not sure if there is some additional place where the settings are kept, but that is a pretty frustrating "feature."

In Vista: C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Roaming\XBMC

I can't remember exactly where in XP but it is something like: C:\Documents and Settings\<you>\Application Data

I want to use XBOX MEDIA CENTER as my main video player.... it doesn't support any of my videos. I need DIVX support, as much as I suspect I won't get it.

Oh, and weather (one of the things I really want doesn't work. Also, I massively want plugin support. Then, after those things I'll be happy.

I could be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure Divx and xvid are the two codecs MOST likely to be supported by XBMC.

That said, you're statement lacks any kind of specifics and might or might not contain certain inaccuracies.

This thread is about XBMC for Windows. Much like DVDs are officially no longer Digital Video Discs, so too is XBMC no longer Xbox Media Center. The official name is actually XBMC.

Next, I don't know if this is required or if this installer comes with its own copy, but free support for divx currently exists in the form of the ffdshow tryouts, downloadable through sourceforge.net. Install ffdshow. Install XBMC. Voila, DIVX support.

I can't help you with the weather issue, as I think that is tied to networking, and networking doesn't work yet. Give these amateur masterminds a little time, though, and I'm confident that networking will be in the cards for a future beta release.

Wrong. XBMC doesn't touch ANY of the system installed codecs/fiters. It uses ffmpeg via dvdplayer. Binaries for ffmpeg are in system/players/dvdplayer. xvid/divx is of course inthere along with h.264 and heap of containers. On my system xvid/divx/h.264/mpg plays ok (not fine but I'm still hoping Smile ). But once again XBMC has NOTHING TO DO with DirectShow codecs/filters.

I dug around and found divx file on my system It played fine for me.
maybe if you give some specifics about the codecs and container used some one may be able to help or provide a sample.

The installer worked fine, but as soon as I try and launch it, Windows tells me it encountered an error.

I'm running it with an AMD 2800, nVidia FX 5200 and 1GB under XP SP2. Anyone else having the same problem or found a work around.

I've tried launching with/without parameters.

Also I've updated all video, network, chipset drivers.

thanks

I thought that might be the case, but I figured installing ffmpeg couldn't hurt matters. With all these different branches, it's starting to get confusing to figure out what is and is not changed.

datekman: I won't be helping you either way, as I don't run win32 SDL, but if you want to help other developers and users help you, then at least state what the error was. Furthermore, there may be information in a Debug Log that may be useful.

I presume you get an error on screen? What is that?

The pasted xml file is useless I'm afraid.

I would like to second the problem that datekman is having.

In the weekend I rebuilt my AMD XP 1600+/512MB Ram/ GF4 Ti4200 with winxppro sp3, added drivers then installed XBMC. Same crash as above, even when running the exe directly. There is no discernable usable information at this point.

I have also tried in a WinXP VM with the same problem (I know VM's are not great for this sort of program)

I will also try my other machine tonight (P4 2.8/1.5GB RAM/GF 6800) and post results.

XBMC is a great piece of software and I REALLY hope to get it running on windows.
I'll also second the notion for some sort of TV tuner stuff (whether standalone or integrate with something else)

Thanks for all your hard work!!
