XBMC crashes over Remote Desktop
#1
I'm ready to put my HTPC in the entertainment center but when I remote desktop to it and atart XBMC, XBMC crashes immediately.

Is this a bug or my setup?

thx.

It's the same on my set up, and I believe its because you can't use sdl/opengl over RDC.

I use VNC with XBMC on windows ok....

Considering RDP is native in Windows I'd hope that it would work Sad

RDP is really needed to remote manage the machine when it is in a entertainment rack. VNC is fine but I'd prefer to use RDP if we can Smile

I just like vnc for this application at least because if I remote into the computer it doesn't lock the local screen of the machine i'm getting into

If we could it would be a nice one to fix. VNC has had a number of security issues

there is a "fix" for XP to enable multiple remote login sessions without locking-out the local session. goog multi session xp and it will popup Wink

I agree Smile

you might want to take a look at ultravnc. it should address your concerns with vnc. it supports data encryption, and can use domain based authentication. and you should try another SDL based application over an RDP session to see if this is specific to Xbmc or not.

According to this article; "...it is actually true that you can run 3D apps over Remote Desktop (Terminal Server). The key is that the machine you are remoting into must be running Windows Vista with a WDDM driver. "

Yeah I've done that before... It just sounded that the original poster was saying that they wanted to control the console session, not create a new remote session. RDP can do the "remote assistance" type of control but that requires someone at the console to initiate it in one form or another AFAIK

I just used vnc as a quick and dirty way to remote in just from my local network... not opened over the internet... so I wasn't worried about security that much...

if it helps, when you remote desktop to a windows box, i'm pretty sure windows effectively swaps the video driver out for one that does passthru so that the video can be rerouted (it doesnt afaik send bitmaps like vnc does, but instead instructions on how to redraw the screen + some small bitmaps)
this makes it quick, but a few apps dont like it.
for example, if im encoding a dvd in nero vision express, and i remote to the machine, nero will crash. it's fine if i start nero VE when i'm in the remote session. i'd say its defintely something to do with the lack of opengl support in the passthru

As XBMC for Windows renderer is OpenGL using hardware acceleration I very much doubt that it will ever work over RDP, ...but when you RDP to a machine running XBMC it should not cause XBMC to crash non-the-less (I believe you should just not see anything on the screen, or when running windowed you should not see the XBMC window). Does it matter if you run XBMC windowed or fullscreen?

Please post two debug logs, one when windowed and one when in full-screen:

[EDIT]: PS! Please google "opengl AND rdp" for a lot of information.
