Buffering on hi-def mkv files
#1
Hi there,

I downloaded and installed XBMC last night it looks awesome and plays my small avi files wonderfully, however when I try and play a 1gig+ Hi Def MKV file off the HDD it gets about 11 seconds in and pops up a buffering dialog at which point it seems to hang.

heres a pastebin of the log http://pastebin.com/m53f60e91

I downloaded the latest Graphics Drivers off HP site last night and have done similar with audio drivers not long ago.

Any ideas?

I am running an HP Pavillion DV6756TX

Intel 2.4GHz
GeForce 8400M GS with 256meg dedicated
250 gig HDD
Vista home premium

Thanks,
Eamon

What have you set the audio output to? I get the same problem when I have it set to 'digital', but if I select 'analog' everything works fine and dandy. I am outputting audio through hdmi, by the way.

Brilliant that fixed that I am also outputting through HDMI I would have thought it would work as a digital source but am finding that it is not all it seems to be cracked up to be. Kinda a shame as I am using a nice Onkyo reciever hoping to get a decent 5.1 output but working is good.

So should I be able to output a digital signal is it a problem with XBMC or my machine I wonder (or my brainSmile?

Thank you, and any further suggestions/ideas are welcome.

I don't think it's XBMC, I'm using digital output through a coax to my z-5500 speakers and I have no issues playing mkv files. 720p and 1080p plays well, stutters a little bit in the beginning while buffering but after a couple of seconds everything's ok.

Disabling digital out did it for me too using ATI mobility X1600 . Latest 7.6 catalyst drivers. with 7.4 dll file posted earlier. That fixed my green video. And switching to analog audio fixed the .mkv files hanging witha buffer window.

Hmm, I also get the buffering and mine only works when set to digital. I output from an MSI Geforce 8600 HDMI video card to my yamaha 633 receiver. When I set it to analog, I don't hear anything at all.

It's the reverse for me. I hear nothing when digital is checked. I too have an MSI Geforce 8600 but I'm not using a receiver. My connection is via HDMI straight to my TV.

Check your "default device" settings in the Sound and Audio Devices section in the Windows Control Panel. Most cards split out the Digital connection from the default audio output.
...and that's why god gave us whiskey.

Just for the record my HD mkv files play just fine with my audio set to digital outputting over coax.

I can confirm this was what was causing all of the crashing issues for me too. Changed audio to analog and boom, all of my .mkv's starte dplaying without crashing.

I typically use the analog DD 5.1 output (5 mini jacks on the back of my computer) and can't seem to get that to work. Guess I'll play some more.

Anyone found a solution to this issue yet? Setting it to Analog prevents the files from hanging, but it downmixes everything to 2 channels. Sure it works, but you're missing out on 5.1.

I haven't. Switching back to digital still causes XBMC to hang for me.
