I'm going to replace my Xbox with a computer. Why?
-Xbox is starting to feel really slow when browsing my library
-Has problems with HD videos
-Building computers is fun
To that end I have put together this system on Newegg:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/Public...er=6747934
The relevant stuff here:
-one of those small Shuttle barebones (only 8" by 7.5" by 11")
-Intel G33 Northbridge
-Intel ICH9DH Southbridge
-Integrated Intel GMA 3100 graphics with HDMI output
-Integrated Realtek ALC888DD audio interface with SPDIF output
-2GB of DDR2 800 RAM
-Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz E7200 Wolfdale 3MB L2 Cache
-Anywhere USB IR remote receiver (MCE logo'd)
The basic plan is to use all this stuff to do 720p output and then if/when I get a 1080 display then I'll upgrade the CPU and / or install a real graphics card. My current screen is one of those 32" LCDs that's natively 1366 by 768, and I've been happy with the Xbox's 720p output for a long time.
So do you guys think that will work?
Also I am a still haven't really hit a point where Linux or Windows XP is the clear choice.
Windows XP = really easy, no learning required
Linux = Interesting and neato, and roommate can't break it with malware ^_^
Also if this topic is somehow wrong due to a lack of searching, I apologize. The proxy I have to use to get to this site from work makes it really really slow
