Sometimes it isn't just about hardware specs. In my experience you need coreavc to get 1080p videos to play correctly (at least for h264 vids). Both of my computers can play 1080p videos fine with Mediaportal (or media player classic) and coreavc. However, XBMC uses ffmpeg, which isn't quite up to par with coreavc. Either FFmpeg will close the performance gap or the guys at XBMC will figure something out. I like XBMC better than Mediaportal, so I'm anxiously waiting and can't wait to see what XBMC can do on a PC.

No FFmpeg only scales to two threads on CERTAIN types of video. So for now the quad is useless. You need clock not cores. AFAIK no one has got the killa sampla to play smoothly on any AMD cpu, so if you haven't bought anything yet, you may want to consider intel.

Sorry, I thought you were asking if you should upgrade to new hardware, so I figured the cost of coreavc would be far less than all new hardware. I also think the XBMC team will get 1080p video working eventually, so if I were deciding against upgrading hardware and waiting for them to get it working, I'd wait. But if you are buying stuff anyway, then disregard my advice.
