"Adjust Display Refresh Rate" vs "Sync Playback to Display"
#61
Thanks for info. I had major issues with Kodi 15.2 on my am logic s812 device where the voices were off by at least +225ms but varied from movie to movie. I followed instructions from original post and tried the movies that I knew had terrible sync issues and they seem to be working fine now. I now see the value in purchasing a box from a company that will provide firmware updates. Thanks again!

I am having problem using the feature "Pause during refresh rate change".
Somehow the Videos are not paused during a framerate change.

I have tested this on my Kodi v14 and upgraded it to v15 with same issue.

That 24p / 23.976 is such a nightmare since it is unclear how the TV manufacturers implemented it. Does my TV just switch to 24Hz? Does it know how to handle 23.976? Do I still need "Sync Playback to Display"? What actual pulldown is my TV doing if it gets 23.976 material? It's really frustrating... especially if you lack the proper test files to check your TV since you can not count on what the manufacturers tell you. I had asked this question here but no one answered http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=245594

My TV does support and switch to 24Hz when "Adjust Display Refresh Rate" is enabled and even with "Sync Playback to Display" I have the feeling I see a slight stutter (looks more like a duplicate frame) every 20 seconds or so. This type of stutter is (for me) way more annoying then the constant 2:3 pulldown stutter especially if it happens right before a scene cut, making it appear as if the display freezes for a very short moment. I know I should get perfect 24p playback with "Adjust Display Refresh Rate" and "Sync Playback to Display" enabled but for some reason I don't.

I'm using a RPi2 with OpenELEC (Adjust PLL, Passthrough Audio) and a Philips 48PFS8159

A few months ago i got a projector, since i noticed small slowdowns in movies playback i set my kodi to "always adjust refresh rate" and "sync playback". Playback is smooth now but i always get the black screen as soon as i start playing a movie (like everybody else it seems). Someone please help me understand, will i always see the black screen before every movie? No kind of workaround? Thanks.

23.976 and 24 are two completely different refresh rates. Most content will be at 23.976, which is not the same as 24. Make sure your tv supports both.

Hi

Hope someone on this forum can help regarding 4K stutter via Kodi, heres my hardware...

Hisense 65" K720 4K TV
Nvidia Shield at U3/Marshmallow
Official Kodi 16.0 "Jarvis" from Play Store

My TV supports the following over HDMI2.0 HDCP2.2 - 3840X2160/24Hz/25Hz/30Hz/50Hz/60Hz
And I am also using 'Audio Passthrough' enabled in Kodi
And my Shield is connected directly to my TV

I'm having trouble deciding between what 'Resolution and Refresh rate' I should have the Shield set to in HDMI settings, listed below...

4K 60Hz (Recommended)
4k 50Hz
4k 23.96Hz
1080p 60Hz

And what I should have 'Adjust display refresh rate' and 'Sync Playback to Display' set to in Kodi's Video/Playback settings

I'm losing my mind flipping between different resolutions etc to get rid of judder that is occurring upon playback, any ideas please?

The Android port of Kodi does not have "Sync Playback to Display" implemented.

Yes just noticed that, I swore I saw it Confused

But still, what would you say is my best option here?

The Shield settings shouldn't matter so long you're on one of the 4K ones and Kodi has "Adjust display refresh rate" enabled. Kodi will switch the refresh rate as needed to the closest available rate, or something to that extent (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm guessing you've done this and you still have stutter. Please try this with SPMC (wiki) and then file a bug report on https://github.com/koying/SPMC/issues

At the moment, that is the best way of getting the issue fixed or explained.

Still fighting with the problem that Videos are not paused during framerate change.
Also tried it now on v16.

Looks like it has been implemented in SPMC 16.1.1

More likely that koying just never got round to removing from spmc as I don't believe the setting has ever done anything on Android.

This is excellent thread with solid information regarding frame rates.

I have anomaly on my system that I'm trying to understand. It's not causing issues but it bothers me to see it.

I have Epson project 5030UB connected to RPi2 and recently testing RPi3.
What I see is that refresh rate reported by the projector is not in sync with what Pi is displaying.
My settings are:
Adjust display refresh rate - Always
Sync playback to display OFF

Half the time I see projector showing 24.00Hz while RPi is set for and reports 23.98Hz.
The randomness is based on Kodi player initializing the screen. By starting the system projector may boot into 24.00Hz or 23.98Hz even if Kodi is set and displaying 23.98Hz. If I change refresh rate from Kodi to 24 and back to 23.98 or even cancel half way through projector may jump into 23.98Hz. Changes to audio mode, restart player "Y" key and anything else that makes the screen black can cause projector to jump into 24Hz or 23.98 rather random at 50% chance.

RPi SSH tvservice -s reports in both cases 24.00 and 23.98 the same message:
"state 0x12000a [HDMI CEA (32) RGB lim 16:9], 1920x1080 @ 23.98Hz, progressive"

Monitoring HDMI status with tvservice -M when changing frame rates:
"[I] HDMI in HDMI mode"

When playing true 24.00 fps movie I get automatic refresh rate change to 24 and tvservice -s reports:
"state 0x12000a [HDMI CEA (32) RGB lim 16:9], 1920x1080 @ 24.00Hz, progressive"

I didn't notice this issue with PS3. It shows 23.98Hz on the projector always.

I'm not quite sure about the mechanism behind this. I don't really see dropping frames every 20s when projector is in 24Hz rather then 23.98. My settings for frame interpolation is set to low on scale 0 to 3. I know you guys are against this feature but the low setting helps to sharpen the image with panning scenes and it does not eliminate true 24 frames experience. Any missing frames are clearly visible on my 150" wall with or without frame interpolation.

Projector is showing Sync Info SSNN 02700 during 24.00Hz and SSNN 02696 when it is set for 23.98Hz. I don't have any information regarding this.

3D packed frames. Projector shows 24.00Hz at 90% at the time with RPi showing 23.98Hz always. On rare occasion I can see 23.98 on the projector info screen with 3D packed frames. PS3 is always showing 24Hz on 3D blu-rays.

My preferred mode for 3D on this projector with active glasses is high (max) for frame interpolation. I can't find any information and I don't have any equipment to measure this but it looks like the glasses are working at 120Hz fixed speed independent from the source material and projector frame rate. At 24 fps it looks like the 3D glasses are out of sync to video frame rate. With frame interpolation to the max. glasses will pick any high speed interpolated frames without noticeable pulsing and skips.

Pictures below are from latest Tarzan trailer from apple.com to illustrate the 32.98 to 24.00Hz issue. The issue is consistent on any 23.98 fps video material with RPi2 and 3 independent from source material or compression type.
