i cannot reproduce any breakage on non-le platforms. i've had others report it working. all reports of breakage has stopped when i request logs. so afaik it's not broken, nor was it ever.

@ironic_ monkey see anything usefull in my log why addon cannot browse and play rar with .mkv inside on Libreelec

Hi,

I've also been hit with the rar playback problem since sometime last spring as I was unaware of the fact that the rar plugin has been moved out of Kodi.

I just tested this again with todays nightly build (20170801.0200-50b6a1f) from team-xbmc Ubuntu PPA and vfs.rar-999.2.0.0.2-#0711-milhouse-#0711-milhouse.zip from post #27 but mkv video playback from rar files still fails. The logfile can be found here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/25219377/

For comparison I downgraded to some older build (20170328.0201-3bfcc18) that I have been using and the video plays just fine from the very same rars. The logfile for the older build is here: http://paste.ubuntu.com/25219389/

Issue is fixed in todays master. PR https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/pull/12605

You might be able to workaround it by editing the vfs.rar`s addon.xml. Change the default value of filedirectories from true to false.

I encounter strange behavior or the RAR Support since Kodi 18 changed to libarchive instead of the older RAR only VFS addon.
Yes, I activated the addon and when I browse a folder with RAR content there is simply no file to play visible. Also my database entrys (MySQL) with working rar:// links do not work anymore, there is simply no playback of any entry/file.

Something seems to be broken, at least on my Android ARMv8a platform (Box is a Nvidial Shield TV).

I would include logs but even on debug level there is no single worthy line, beside open/close messages of the rar/r?? files there is no single error or related message.

Actually I am idealess... Rolling back to an older Kodi 18 version with the old rar VFS addon brings all back to business.
BTW: Protocol does not matter, at least the error occurs with NFS and SMB protocol.

Anyone with a hint or is this a real bug?

No, not really. If you have already looked at the log and found nothing worthy, then it will remain a mystery

if it only happends on nfs or smb shares(try a local file), then maybe vfs stacking got broken

i admit i have done rather limited tests for vfs.libarchive, but all reading is through vfs so it should be just as broken for local files. and it works for me over local or sftp. on my amd64 ubuntu.

Well, it does not work with local files also.
I can tell now that local/SMB/NFS/WebDAV will not work anymore (beginning with libarchive), in the Filebrowser RAR and embedded MKV files are simply not listed, so nothing to play...

Update: I can also confirm now that the Windows Version is also affected, tried it with KodiSetup-20180114-089ffc36-master-x64.exe.
Since the RAR VFS Library is still available there you can switch between both addons:

libarchive active: no packed mkv / rar files visible 
librar active: packed mkv / rar files visible & playable

So I believe this is definitly a problem of the new libarchive.vfs...

@spiff I tried also SFTP without any luck, it's the same problem like with other protocols.

OK, I just did a fresh install of Kodi for clean logs. I changed nothing in Kodi beside adding a NFS source and activating the libarchive addon.
