kodi stable, then few times a year it does not start - versioning roaming discussion
#1
I feel like it has been a decade in which I have used kodi.
I remembering always investing a lot of time and energy creating a kodi environment with everything I want,
then it is very stable and I do not change it at all and it serves me well for a few months or years
and then without warning something catastrophic spontaneously happens and it keeps crashing at best or fails to start at worst
in which case I suddenly have to spend more energy and time to google how to extract logs and see why it fails starting all of a sudden
at best after spending more time and energy I may be able to fix it, at worst I will have to do a full uninstall including removing the "roaming" addons directory entirely
and start from a fresh install, spending once again all the time and energy recreating the environment I want.
and once again it will be stable for some significant time, till all this story reproduces.

This has happened to me countless times throughout the years of using kodi. and I've had enough!
if the cause is outside, meaning I'm using an addon that communicates with an external resource that may become unstable
then there really is nothing I can do to fix it.
but I suspect most of the times kodi fails to even start is because of an internal reason bound to the kodi machine.

What I really want, is to force kodi to freeze everything it has local once it is stable, and never change again, so it will remain stable forever.
Is there a chance kodi is changing itself locally while I'm running it? applying auto updates of addons and other things which add the bugs which cause the crashes or failures to even start?
Will force-freezing it prevent those issues?

I've had an idea of running git-init on all kodi folders so I can track all changes done after it is stable, so I could always restore it to a stable point without wasting time and energy reinstalling it ever again throughout the years.

Any other practical solutions to this known issue of kodi suddenly failing to load after years of being stable?

and I'm not interested (in this thread) in spending time and energy investigating the logs of this specific instance of kodi failing to start (maybe in another thread)
I want to discuss how kodi users have worked around the spending of so much time investigating and reinstalling?

for me its not just reinstalling kodi, its also reinstalling many addons, and recreating many kodi-favorites. I'm sick and tired of doing this process again and again every time kodi decides to change itself.
Maybe its not just kodi that had changes done that are causing it to not start? maybe its the entire os that had windows updates break kodi? maybe I should freeze the entire os too in a virtual machine snapshot to protect kodi from failing to start?
Its a ridicules option but at this point I'm really desperate and I'm ready to hear any solution that permanently prevents spending more time fixing kodi being unable to start issue. I don't want to do it again anymore.

Did anybody find a way to avoid it when it happens again and again?

Edit button is missing (please fix this)
I found the problem, to reproduce:
A. I change resolutions from 1920x1080
start kodi in full screen
exit kodi
kodi remembers last resolution
B. change resolution to 1366x768
start kodi
kodi remembers last resolution and tries to fullscreen on it
then kodi crashes instead of simply starting in the lower resolution.

to solve this I change resolution back to A. start kodi, and while kodi is still running I change resolution to B.
then kodi process is still alive and is adjusting to the new resolution.

This is actually a very ancient bug, I remember it from many years ago. it surprises this still was not fixed after all of this time.

I've been using Kodi happily for 4-5 years now. Any failures to start have been my own doing with failed experimentation or something. I'm assuming you are using current and not something from 10 years ago right? Hard to tell. This is the first I've ever seen this complaint about it actually. You really can't claim bug or anything if you refuse to post logs or try to help people find it. That just doesn't make sense.

You're a newbie account, so you don't have the priv's yet to edit posts (it's a deliberate anti-spam measure).

Once your account meets the requirements and advances above newbie status, the edit privs will be granted automatically and will become available.
