v19 Ugly startup screen
#1
[PatK - mode edit] title changed to reflect subject.

I have set up Kodi for my parents and it pains me to see them being confused and turned off by the ugly new startup screen with the nerdy Matrix theme.
Initially, they even thought that something was broken or got hacked.

Please don't tell me that I can manually set it up by fiddling around.

In my opinion, a clean, minimalist design should be the default.
Just a clean Logo in the middle on a unicolor background, no weird Star Wars theme spaceship window (V18 and before), no weird Matrix code and no Back to the Future burning tire marks for V20, please.

Rant is over. Thanks for the consideration.

Fiddling around with configuration files on a TV box, perhaps again and again with every other revision, is really not much fun.

The point is that the default should be a minimalist design and not a theme that only a subset of the user base can associate with.

.....in your opinion. I'm sure many users like the themed startup screen, and that's their opinion.

This is why the option for you to create a simple text file which disables it is there, to give users a choice. If you can't be bothered to create a text file then you'll just have to live with it, or find something else with a plain startup screen.

It is not just an opinion that only a subset of the users are Star Wars and Matrix fans.
If Star Wars and Matrix fans can't be bothered to tinker around with some config files then they should just have to live with the fact that they can't see an image reference of their favorite movie every damn day.

Come on, it can't be that hard to admit that content neutrality makes more sense for consensus.
No other quality media player is pushing a Justin Bieber or Indiana Jones theme onto every user by default, for this very good reason.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, when I light up Kodi, my heart leaps, the visuals bring an almost religious experience!

Google use the exact same naming convention as Kodi. Kodi 18 - L (Leia), Kodi 19 - M (Matrix), Kodi 14 - H (Helix) etc etc.... Android 2.3 - G (Gingerbread), Android 8 - O (Oreo), etc etc....

Google had a Gingerbread man as the logo for 2.3, and a Marshmallow for Android 6.0, it helps differentiate the different versions. So if Google can use food-based logos as their OS identifier then Kodi can use Film based subjects for theirs. And if you don't like it, make a text file to get rid of it.

And to be honest with you, I don't even care what the boot image looks like, it flashes up for like 2 seconds when I boot the device. It's largely insignificant to me what they put on there.

Exactly. That's why it should be an option rather than the default to run a subjective media title theme.

I have nothing against revision codenames.
The Android (including 2.3 & 6.0) boot screens did not use a visual reference to the codenames. They only had a hidden away or developer network gimmick graphic.

Kodi needs to be started regularly for many users because it is advisable to close background apps to save resources and many cut the power to save the high idle power use of TV's and TV boxes.

Or you could just replace the splash screen with one of your own if you wanted to, including a blank/empty splash.

Always something sci-fi or marvel related with the Kodi version names is perhaps getting a lil boring, so I would personally suggest something relating to the music band Alestorm.
But since that band plays "Pirate metal" I don't think my suggestions will be accepted anytime soon by the Kodi board...

We have our annual (sort of) moment where forum users can suggest the name for the next Kodi release, starting with the letter next in line, which this time is the 'N'.
Wanna give it a go?

The splash helps with debugging.

Me: what version Kodi you using?
Them: what is a version?
Me: what do you see when you start kodi?

And if they had launched vlc, they would have thought that the TV was under construction?

It's bad faith, just explain to them that this is the startup image

He isn't wrong though. I'd love to see some demographic information as it pertains to Kodi users. I'm willing to bet most of us have grown out (a little anyhow) of needing forward-facing interfaces that others might use to appear so "juvenile".

We don't collect any such info on our users, and never will.
