4K HDR10+ contents not played correctly on Xiaomi Mi Box S
#1
Hi,

1st post here but a long time user of xbmckodi.

I've got some 4K HDR10+ contents that aren't played correctly by Kodi on a specific combo hardware/OS.

I have tested with the following samples found in this page (https://kodi.wiki/view/Samples) in the 4K (UltraHD) and HDR10, 10+ & Dolby Vision section:
- 13 HDR10+ HEVC 10-bit 23.976 Sample (in MKV with Dolby ATMOS audio)
- 14 HDR10+ Dynamic Metadata Test 60fps (in MP4)

These files are played correctly in the following setups:
- Windows on x86/64
- OpenElec on RPI4
- Android on Nvidia Shield (1st gen)

But on the Android TV Xiaomi Mi Box S (MDZ-22-AB, up to date), Kodi starts to play the file, audio is ok, but displays a black screen (or some grey lines on the top left of the screen).
When the same files are played by VLC in the same box, there is no problem.

All this have been tested with the latest stable version of Kodi (19.3).

Before going any further with this, I'm looking for some people who experience the same behaviour or have the necessary setup to replicate it, and for advice to collect the relevant data needed to confirm the issue (logs, conf, ...).

Cheers,
Clement

I'm sure you meant LibreELEC... OpenELEC development was stopped some 7 years ago.
Android boxes can sometimes benefit from running a CoreELEC image.

Yes of course. Old habits...
Already checked if LibreELEC could be installed on the Mi Box S, but all attempts I found were not conclusive.

With no feedback for 6 months now... Sad
I've been forced to stay on 18.9 on android till this (and possibly some other  add-ons  related issues) will be attended to, using another [minimal] fork of 19.x in parallel just for testing stuff..

I have a Mi Box but the model previous to the S. I thought it was a compatibility issue with the box, not Kodi. Video plays fine but with washed color. The TV doesn't show HDR10plus is on.

I have tried v19.5 now (andoid 9 Amlogic s905x2) and it still does not work Sad  This time I used the two demo clips on Kodi site - https://kodi.wiki/view/Samples :
15. HDR10+ Profile A HEVC 10-bit 23.976 Sample (in MKV with DTS:X audio) https://mega.nz/file/af4zSAbQ#gBiHRiX3oL...Gpg96nAWXE
16. HDR10+ Profile B HEVC 10-bit 23.976 Sample (in MKV with EAC-3 JOC ATMOS audio)  https://mega.nz/file/nehDka6Z#C5_OPbSZkO...ZHruHcWKyA

Can someone try with Kodi v20 ?

Update:
I found the setting that causes this : (expert) System->videio->allow HW acceleration - MediaCodec (surface)

If you disable it - the video shows up. Just hat this is VERY needed if your CPU is not that strong, and you might see stuttering.. . Any know W/A?
