Why does Kodi use .NFO extension instead of just using .XML extension

Why does Kodi use .NFO extension instead of just using .XML extension for the XML files?

The problem with using .NFO extension is that many text editors e.g. notepad++
-does not show XML tags in proper color coding format to make it easier to read
-interpret .nfo file as OEM-US (due to DOS era NFO files) rather UTF-8 so it cannot display asian fonts (for original titles tag)

Kodi's .nfo files doesn't always contain XML, they can contain:

1) Just XML
2) Just a URL that should be used by the scraper
3) A combination of XML and URL

Maybe you should install the XML plugin?

You have to edit npp config to change default treating of nfo extension.

Then you probably are using the wrong text editor. I'm using Sublime Edit and it either automatically picks up on xml tags, or I can tell it to treat whatever .extension files as .xml files. And if I don't like the colours, I can change those too.
