Hi,

I'm looking for help here as Kodi can't stream movie files from my NFS share on my iMac since I updated to Ventura today. I know this may not be a Kodi client problem per say but I don't know where to find help elsewhere...

Here's my setup : Kodi is installed on my Android TV (xiaomi mi box) and plays files through a NFS Share on my iMac, sharing folders from an external hard drive plugged by USB.
It worked seamlessly throughout the years since I did the MacOS update to Ventura 13.0

My NFS share works well when tested with my Mac.
Kodi allows the NFS Share as a source and can browse files correctly, but when I try to play a file I get the following error message : "One more items failed to play. Check the log for more information about this message."
The logs are not really explicit as all I can find is :

XFILE::CNFSFile::Read - Error( -4, read call failed with "Command was cancelled" )

CDVDDemuxFFmpeg::Open - Error, could not open files nfs://192.168.0.10/Volumes/LaCie Yann/Movies/[...].mkv

I tried different Kodi clients : Kodi 19.3 on Android TV, Kodi 19.4 on Windows and Kodi 19.4 on MacOS

Some complementary informations :

• On my mac the nfsd process is with the argument "-N" as explained in the documentation : "ps aux | grep nfs" gets me the "/sbin/nfsd -N" process launched by root
  
• My /etc/exports configuration file for the nfs share has the mapall argument with my macOS uid : "/Volumes/LaCie\ Yann /Volumes/LaCie\ Yann/Movies /Volumes/LaCie\ Yann/Share /Volumes/LaCie\ Yann/Torrents /Volumes/LaCie\ Yann/TV\ Shows -alldirs -mapall=501"
  
• I also tried using the SMB file sharing service of MacOS but I get the same problem although browsing is way slower than with NFS
  

From all this I'm guessing something changed on MacOS' side when updating to Ventura but I can't find what configuration, what permission or what obscure detail.
If anything has a lead I could test it :-)

Some informations that may help or eliminate some leads :

• the nfsd process has the permission of full disk access
  
• SIP is disabled
  
• I also tried having a local folder shared through NFS instead of sharing a folder from an external hard drive but the problem is the same
  
• I also tried putting the shared folder in 777 CHMOD without results
  
• I tried playing a file while looking at the NFSD logs on mac and found this :

But it doesn't help me much

The logs are not really explicit as all I can find is :

We still prefer to see the debug log (wiki) in full so we can have a proper look and see the complete context.
Only 1 or 2 single log lines is typically not much to go on. So provide the log via a pastebin service for the initial look-up.

This one is not quite full enough, as you have not yet enabled 'debugging' in the Kodi menu. It's very recommended when troubleshooting any hiccups.
Do that, restart Kodi, and with that a more detailed log can be generated. I don't know if more info will be regarding the NFS situation, but it's worth a try.

I haven't used Ventura yet, no idea.

can only suggest to try another NFS server program, if googling "macos ventura nfs error" doesn't reveal anything. I've recently discovered https://github.com/unfs3/unfs3 that allowed me sharing exFAT drive via NFS on macOS 12.6 (built-in nfsd is unable to work with exFAT). You'd need version 0.9.23 and apply patch on top of that (or I can send you my binary).

have you tried other NFS clients to check if it's a Kodi client issue or your NFS server's?

I will try this another NFS Server this week-end, it may be a lead even though the problem I'm having is not defined by sharing the external hard drive as I got the same error when sharing local mac folder.
I tried to open a movie file through the NFS filepath with VLC and I got the same problem : I can browse files but can't play, but VLC logs doesn't tell me much.
This confirms my suspicions it's not a Kodi Client problem but a macOS NFS share permission or configuration problem since updating to Ventura...

Thanks ! I forced SMBv1 as minimum and maximum version in Kodi and now it seems to works well, which is a good workaround for my NFS Sharing problems while I investigate more :-)

This puzzles me.  It sounds like you are giving the contents of /etc/exports, but those contents don't make sense.  What is this between the quotes, and what exactly is in /etc/exports?

The last form is all you need, then in Kodi you can specify each source with the specific directory.  I would try a couple of things:

1. Change the mapall to -mapall=root; this makes sure Kodi will not have permission problems.  Possibly your user ID changed when you upgraded.  In any case it's a more comprehensive approach.
   
2. It's unfortunate you have a space in the path.  Just in case, you could try enclosing the path in quotes instead of escaping the space, either or both on the server in the Kodi source.

I had already checked but my uid didn't changed.
I tried the mapall=root and tried enclosing the path in quotes but this does not solve the problem.

When you posted 2 lines from your logs, are those debug logs?  In any case I suggest you follow the procedure for creating and posting a link to full debug logs.

Also open Console on your iMac and see if you can find where it logs attempts to access NFS shares (exports) and post those lines.

If you have another computer, try accessing your NFS shares from it.  For example, if you have another Mac, use Go > Connect to Server, and enter nfs://192.168.0.10/Volumes/LaCie\ Yann/Movies/ and see if you get a list of the Movies.  Because of the ID issue, I suggest you keep the share as -mapall=root for this test.
