Possible OLED burn in from the version check message box
#1
Hey guy!

Today i've got the version check message box telling me, there is a new KODI version. Since this message box popped up while i was gone from the room for some hours, i ask myself if it is a possible thread for OLED screens. Because this version check is on top of all, on top of my screen saver and there for hours, i kinda think this would affect OLED screens. I'm "lucky" myself, it was not an OLED in my case but it could be one.

Are my concerns about this version check message box in combination with OLED and burn ins a real problem?

Thanks!

That's why I have the screensaver active on my Kodi installs.  Though I admit not sure if a modal dialog window blocks the screensaver?

In my case it did block the screen saver. I use the "Digital Clock Screensaver" https://kodi.wiki/view/Add-on:Digital_Clock_Screensaver

The background was still black like the screen saver would be but no clock (jumping around after few seconds)  and on top the version check message.

Probably a good idea to add autoclose to the dialog..

I know I've thought about it on my 1st gen OLED (Sony A1E).  But I don't just leave Kodi up with TV on unattended except for music sometimes.   Maybe just disable the version checker and also auto addon update as a safeguard.

Well, if i fall asleep after a two Scrubs episodes, i may wake up in the morning watching the clock screensaver. Nextup plugin did stop after 3 episodes so my beauty sleep was not interrupted. But from time to time a new KODI version arrives and the nice clock screensaver is overlapped by a giant new version box. At least on windows, did not try this on android yet. I get it, if i woulde use an OLED monitor/tv, i would turn that thing off after x hours - for sure, so i don't kow if a static box in the center would have a real world impact on OLED screens at all. I only sugest this as an option to kinda future proof this and it may even more clever to informat the user about a new KODI version right after KODI was started - once.

No. ChatGPT would post a real solution or fail to do so in a more entertaining way. OK, you could be Bard, i give you that.  Rofl

It's good thing that we can (still) identify & catch chatbots on our forum. They still lack a decent amount of "peripheral vision" in them. Or display some type of stupidity, whatever comes first.

i gave you a link to a solution that was invented over 25 years ago to solve screen burn - make the display turn off after x amount of time, it is built into every system these days

because its such an obvious solution to anyone that has used a computer in the last 25+ years for more than 5 minutes i did not feel the need to explain, but since you require an explanation....
Quote:hey since you mention youre on windows why not configure windows to turn the screen off after a couple of hours
kodi has functions in place to prevent it during playback so it shouldnt turn off while youre watching a video

i do this with my own media devices and it seems to work

there you go now you have the link on how to change it as well as all my time required to explain something that should have been obvious
