I have built my own kernels since 1997, I do not recall any significant changes in kernel which obsoleted older hardware. Can't tell for Ubuntu developers, they may have dropped something they think is no longer needed. Get some other distro.

I'm stuck on an old kernel because I'm on ancient hardware and I'm starting to discover addons that dropped Leia.
I managed to find a Kodi 20 Alpha on the testing PPA for Ubuntu 18.04, but is there a way to get the stable without building everything from scratch?

I try to stay away from that because of all the flags and stuff I have to look up.

Thank you very much!

You can get Kodi 19.4 stable for Ubuntu Bionic.

Kodi 20 may not suit Ubuntu 18.04, and all newer addons target python3 which is certainly available on Kodi19.4

The youtube-addon requires kodi 20 since it relies on inputstream-adaptive built for kodi 20.

isn't it more likely that the problem you have is the version of ubuntu you are running?
