Kodi Video Player - Choppy playback on some videos
#1
Hello,

A few days ago I noticed that some videos have choppy playback and others don't. I haven't made any update or installed any new addon that can cause this erratic behaviour.

I'm at Kodi 19.4 (Libreelec 10.0.3) at Raspberry Pi3 B+

I'm attaching the full log here:

https://paste.kodi.tv/eyedelejix.kodi

At this line there's a file which is reproduced correctly

2023-05-15 22:00:13.062 T:803 INFO <general>: VideoPlayer::OpenFile: smb://DELLXPS8300/Incoming2/L.A.Confidential.1997.1080p.BluRay.x264.6CH.MkvCage.ws.mkv

At this line, there's a file which is reproduced with choppy playback:

2023-05-15 22:00:51.217 T:803 INFO <general>: VideoPlayer::OpenFile: smb://DELLXPS8300/Incoming2/Series/_Succession - Season 4/Succession.S04E06.720p.WEB.x265-MiNX[TGx]/Succession.S04E06.720p.WEB.x265-MiNX.mkv

Can someone help me, please?

Thanks!

libreelec on pi3 only supports software decoding for hevc - no hardware decoding - https://wiki.libreelec.tv/hardware/raspberry-pi

it would seem your pi is not powerful enough for smooth x265 playback

actually according to that link you need to downgrade to LibreELEC 9.2.x in order for hevc support

Hi,

I don't understand, it was working OK for months, if there was some issue with Libreelec 10.x the problems should have been arised earlier, right?

Where do you see that is HEVC?

x265 is hevc and uses the hevc decoder - x265 is in your filename therefor hevc

according to that wiki it has never worked on 10+ because support for it was dropped, i can only go by the information at hand

I can assure you that the same video were reproduced fine and it began to fail a few days ago. I don't know or understand why this change in the behaviour but if the Raspberry processor wasn't able to reproduce it or if at libreelec 10.x it can't be working it will fail or show this behaviour always and not from a few days ago, that doesn't make sense, so there should be something else that we are missing here, right?

Hello,

I can confirm that it does nothing to do with x265 and HEVC (which was working since a few days ago without any issue), I have tried another video and there's choppy video and the audio goes behind the video image, it looks like there's some issues buffering the video or something like that.

I'm attaching the log:

https://paste.kodi.tv/ijasifihur.kodi

For example, there's choppy video and buffering video/audio issues when I opened this file:

2023-05-16 09:00:02.449 T:803      INFO <general>: VideoPlayer::OpenFile: smb://DELLXPS8300/Incoming2/Series/_La Resistencia - Season 6/La Resistencia - S06E083 - Ptazeta.mp4

I have checked that it's H264

CDVDVideoCodecDRMPRIME::Open - using decoder V4L2 mem2mem H.264 decoder wrapper

And when I open this video, it's working smoothly  without issues:

2023-05-16 09:00:50.015 T:803      INFO <general>: VideoPlayer::OpenFile: smb://DELLXPS8300/Incoming2/Series/_La Resistencia - Season 6/La Resistencia - S06E085 - Eva Soriano.mp4

I have checked and it's using same video decoder:

CDVDVideoCodecDRMPRIME::Open - using decoder V4L2 mem2mem H.264 decoder wrapper

Any help in order to solve this issue, please?

Thanks.

Another head's up, I've been doing some research and it seems that there are other people that were able to reproduce x265 videos with Raspberry Pi3 B+. The curious thing is that for me it had worked fine for several months and the issues begun a few days ago.

Run some additional tests and I have played another x265 videos smoothly... I have activated debug mode and here are the logs:

https://paste.kodi.tv/fogogekasa.kodi

2023-05-16 09:52:18.659 T:803 DEBUG <general>: CPlayerCoreFactory::GetPlayers(smb://DELLXPS8300/Incoming2/Series/From - Season 2/From.S02E01.720p.WEB.x265-MiNX[TGx]/From.S02E01.720p.WEB.x265-MiNX.mkv) ----> Played OK

I have opened the same file that had stutter and buffer issues yesterday and today a while back:

2023-05-16 09:53:21.932 T:803     DEBUG <general>: CPlayerCoreFactory::GetPlayers(smb://DELLXPS8300/Incoming2/Series/_La Resistencia - Season 6/La Resistencia - S06E083 - Ptazeta.mp4)

And it's working fine now. It seems a random issue but I don't know why happens. Maybe it's related to some frame drop, high cpu utilization or something? I was checking the CPU utilization during the video playblack and it wasn't anything too high or abnormal.

That's very strange...

I had a look at your log file, and unfortunately I'm having serious doubts that your installed Alado add-on is providing all legally approved streams. The Luar addon is also too foggy to me as well in that regard. So unless you can debunk my opinion, I'm placing both of them on Kodi's banned add-ons list.

This also means that support on this forum towards your Kodi setup will be halted for now.

Where is this installed? It's a Kodi out of the box Libreelec 10.0.3 and the only addons that I have installed are youtube and duff you, nothing else.

Let me know where I can find this because I haven't installed any illegal addon, that's for sure. And if they're installed somewhere I can uninstall it because i only want Kodi to reproduce videos from my computer via SMB protocol and watching youtube videos, so don't hald anything please...

Hi again Klojum,

I took a look at the log and believe me that I don't know where this is coming from, it's some repository that I haven't installed for sure. I have restored a backup that I made when I installed Libreelec 10.0.3 with Kodi Matrix 19.4 (downloaded via https://libreelec.tv/) and they keep appearing, here's the log, I just rebooted the Raspberry.

https://paste.kodi.tv/ixokavamar.kodi

When I check the repositories appear at the log but when I check the repositories at Kodi, they DON'T appear:

I don't know why is this happening but it seems clear to me that these repositories are not installed on my Kodi. Please, don't halt this issue, I need to fix it with your help.

Thanks.

The thing is, these things do not install themselves. So either you are doing some Kodi administrative things while sleep walking, or someone else has access to your Kodi device.

And perhaps those repository entries are from some older installation. They still show up in the debug log, so they nested themselves into your LibreELEC setup. Have a look in your /storage/.kodi/addons folder.

Your log file also cuts off prematurely, it doesn't mention any video being played, let alone 'choppy'.

if this is back open i would direct the conversation to the same issue reported in december on github where the resolution was 'by design'

https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/issues/22315

edit:

im only trying to point out that you are reporting something not working that is known to not work and is no longer intended to work

Hi @Klojum

I have erased the folders for these repositories so now they aren't appearing. Maybe some relative that has access to my Kodi had done something... now it's sorted. If the issue arises again I will post the detailed log pointing to each video file that it's opened and the exact issue. Thanks for your explanation.

@jepsizofye

Ok, so basically you're telling me that the videos are working luckily randomly? I know that there are HEVC videos and 10bit HEVC videos that aren't working and never worked (black screen or it can't be reproduced) and I'm well aware of that, but there are some other x264 & x265 videos (720p for example) that always worked fine and then randomly the buffering issues begun a week ago or so, audio out of synch with the video and so on, and it's pretty annoying. Check that, It's not something that I came up with and there's plenty of people pointing that:

https://forum.libreelec.tv/thread/17577-...t-keep-up/

https://www.reddit.com/r/raspberry_pi/co...t/dwsa7x5/

If you are telling me based on your link (thanks for that) that the fix is to downgrade to a version 9.2.6 Libreelec (Kodi 18) which I think that is no longer supported or developed (I'm not able to find it at libreelec official page) that doesn't make any sense. If there's any official page where I can find a Libreelec release for Kodi 18 let me know and I will give it a try deploying it to another bootable microSD card.
