I read that some people have been able to get KODI 20.x to play Dolby Vision MP4s, primarily on NVIDIA shield.

I tried playing a DV MP4 with KODI on an XBOX One S and Raspberry Pi 4. They do not play DV. Incidentally, the same DV MP4 does play if I plug it into my LG TV's USB port.

I've read KODI on Pi may not because of DRM. I can understand that. However, shouldn't KODI on XBOX play DV MP4s?

This space of DV in MKVs and MP4s is changing pretty quickly, so I wanted to check on what is currently working.

HDR is not supported at all on the Xbox as far as I'm aware, so it's the best you'll get is HDR10 tonemapped to SDR.

I think @jogal tried to implement basic HDR10 support and I think @Hitcher was involved in some testing but don't think we were ever able to get it working.

For specifically DV then it's Android/FireTV currently for those devices that come with a Dolby Vision decoder built in. Note that some Amlogic Android devices will allow you to install the Linux based CoreElec which has just announce some DV support.

For HDR10 then both Windows and RPi4 do this, and Linux has some experimental support.

side note, to clarify the involvement of DRM and Dolby Vision

DRM in general has nothing to do with kodi or a device's capability of playing Dolby Vision

DRM would prevent a service (Disney+ f.e.) from delivering that content to devices without L1 DRM

(assuming DRM mentioned is Digital Rights Management and not Direct Rendering Manager)

On DRM, while Kodi cannot ship anything to do with DRM it can be added with use of addons. For example the main streaming services all use Widevine for DRM, as this is a Google product it's in included as a module in various incarnations of Chrome/ChromeOS, therefore it's possbile for this module to be downloaded by an addon such as script.module.inputstreamhelper, so you'll find that addons for services like Netflix or Disney+ will rely on this to allow access to their DRM'd services (as long as you have an account of course).

How? The only way I've installed apps is thru the LG app store, which doesn't have KODI.
