Fast Local Network, Good Hardware - Still getting "Source Too Slow" Error Message
#1
I just made the jump from Plex to Kodi and am currently getting the "Source Too Slow For Continuous Playback" message even though all connections are gigabit hardwired and the playback device and server are both powerful. Have previously encountered no buffering or playback issues when using this exact setup with Plex.

This message displays when I begin playing media but I don’t appear to actually encounter any buffering, stuttering, or issues with playback.

I have gigabit connections on all relevant hardware and everything is connected via hardwired ethernet connections using Cat 6 cables. Hardware listed below.

Server: Dell XPS 8940 with i7-11700 and Geforce GTX 1080 Ti
Drives: WD WDC WD140EDGZ-11B1PA0, connected to server via QNAP TR-004 via USB-C
Player: Nvidia SHIELD TV Pro
Network Connection: Gigabit, iperf shows local speeds of 750-850 mbps+ between server and player

Could the message be showing because of the disc spinning up at the beginning of playback or something?

I have no idea why this message is playing as all of my hardware and connections are adequate for high bit rate/large file size playback.

I get the same thing on a full gigabit network, the disks in my servers don't spin down so it's not that.  As you say, there aren't any actual playback problems so the message is actually misinformation.  Not sure what measurement is being taken to conclude that the network is "too slow" but it's not a valid one.

Yeah, I'm curious to know what actual the actual metrics being measured are. Is it an average bitrate of the video file calculated at the beginning of playback that is than compared to the speed of the local network?

fwiw ive received this message in the past due to low memory and on another (different box) i had to adjust the video cache settings in advancedsettings.xml

perhaps if you are able you can check the available memory during playback via adb issuing the command 'free -m'

you can also try the video cache settings - https://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Modify_the_video_cache

I had this issue quite a few years ago. Suddenly I kept getting this message even though nothing on my setup had changed. Then I noticed it came from movies on a particular drive. A few weeks later, my hdd died and I had to replace it.
All good since.

I haven't used my Shield for movies in a while, but I had some rare instances of this message occurring while using my local network. So either my network had a bad hair day, or something else was stuck. It wasn't a EOL harddrive for me.
