@axbmcuser
Many thanks!

I already backported your PR to Leia for use in my own KODI fork. The image quality is so much better, it's just crazy.
Definitely going to enable聽mipmapping by default with fanres/imageres set to 1080 and聽scalingalgorithm set to聽lanczos.

Again, thanks!

Thanks for the feedback. Good to hear that it's working and that you find it useful.

I use the same defaults for my private builds (fanartres/imageres=1080 and scalingalgorithm=lanczos)

Have been running with this for a month on Matrix. So much nicer! Couldn't go back to the default horrible scaling now. Thank you for the patch.

Just a shame it can't be easily supported on OpenGL ES as way back in 2003 they decided that LOD bias was unnecessary useless bloat from OpenGL for the embedded systems of the time. However EXT_texture_lod_bias could be supported as an extension though, just doesn't seem to have been implemented. Should raise a Mesa bug before it becomes necessary to switch from X11/GLX to GBM/OpenGL ES.

HI all I just upgraded from XBMC 12 to Kodi Matrix 19 and noticed the scaled images are poor and been reading about this problem.聽 聽so i installed Kodi 19 from the kodi website and if i create a聽advancedsettings.xml and do this

<imagemipmappingglobal>true</imagemipmappingglobal>
<imageres>1080</imageres>
<fanartres>1080</fanartres>
<imagescalingalgorithm>lanczos</imagescalingalgorithm>

will it work Stright away when i delete the old image cache ?聽 or will i need some sort of kodi hack to make it work better.

thanks

Hi axbmcuser,

Thanks for making the Improved GUI Scaling Testbuilds!聽 For years, it's driven me crazy that thumbnails looked bad in XBMC, but I never understood why!聽 I always assumed it was my machine or something on my end.聽 Your "KODI 18.4 | Windows x64 聽(bettergui001-build)" works (and looks!) great.

I'm using an 8 or 9 year old Intel NUC with Windows 10 x64.聽 Kodi 19 Matrix likes to randomly crash while playing music, so I've been sticking with Kodi 18 Leia.聽 Is there any chance you'll be updating your bettergui build to 18.9, the final version of Kodi Leia?聽 I'd love to get all those bug fixes from 18.5 to 18.9, but I don't want to lose the Improved GUI Scaling!

Thanks again for your efforts here!

Hi, happy new year. Did everything work out with the build we exchanged via PM some time ago?

I've got two new and clean BETTERGUI builds for Windows (Kodi 18.9 and 19.5 (just released)) with some improvements and a few backports from upstream which i'll upload soon.
Maybe someone finds use for it. I myself really can't go back to using Kodi with the broken UI scaling on any version. I just looks horrible. Oo

Hi axbmcuser!

Sorry, I didn't see your post earlier!聽 I tried your newer 18.9 build, but unfortunately I experienced intermittent Kodi crashes, so I had to revert to your 18.4 build, which runs solid for me.聽 I blame the crashes my old Intel NUC, which is now 10 years old.聽 These days, I only use my NUC to play music through KODI, so I'm having trouble justifying a replacement as it still basically "works".聽 I'm not sure if your 19.5 build will be stable on my hardware, but I'm willing to give it a try!聽 Are you planning to eventually release a Nexus build?

Thanks again for all your effort here.聽 Like you, there's no way I could go back to KODI's broken scaling!聽 Just looks awful and it's still shocking to me that the devs are okay with how it looks.

Hi, no worries. Yeah, Nexus build should be no problem. Only problem is finding time for all the "little side projects" which all by themselves consume endless hours of time. Smile
It'll take some time, but i'm shure we will have new bettergui builds at some point. I'll let you know. Smile

Currently testing Omega nightlies to use the new Superresolution scaler

Can you confirm that scaling is still broken for GUI pictures (thumbs, covers, etc.)? It's really a bad look for Kodi...

Sounds like this is purely scaler testing for only the video itself and has nothing to do with the UI. As far as i know there is no interest or work been done on improving UI scaling.

I went looking at your PR and saw they were asking for a rebase. We're now early enough in the Omega development cycle that I think this could be a good time to try and bring this feature into Kodi main. They were asking you stuff in the PR but you never replied (unless I missed it by browsing).

I would greatly appreciate any work you could do in bringing this to all Kodi users. A solution might be found for GL-ES boxes (one of the main concerns raised, as those constitute the majority of Kodi installs nowadays). User Swyter proposed something on your PR. I hope you'll be able to make time to look into this, so that everybody can benefit from your work @axbmcuser

Edit: oh, and I mentioned the Super Resolution thing just to explain why I was using Kodi main and not your DSPlayer builds.
DSPlayer has been abandoned for so long that I am starting to get nervous about it working in the long run. Mainly for scrapers... but even crucial addons like the subtitles ones. Plus madVR development can't be given for granted nowadays.

(Old PR was #18780)

Cheers
