Kodi does not show subtitles
#1
Hi there.
Got an arch linux based box here with kodi installed on it, I use it mainly for storage and as a media-center.
After a full system update yesterday, any of the subtitles are not showing up anymore. Checked all the settings, everything is set up as it should be.
I've already deleted the whole /var/lib/kodi folder and started a blank setup, nothing changed.
It is kodi only, mpv for example has subs as it should.
Nothing strange in the logs.

Any help is appreciated.

Well, the combination of "It's not working" and "nothing strange in the logs" doesn't give us much to go on. A debug-enabled kodi.log file might indicate subtitle problems.

Also the Arch OS isn't in our typical support realm, and that this problem suddenly appears after a 'full system update' makes us point for now at the Arch OS devs who typically build & package their own version of Kodi.

Yep, I just pretty much described what I was experiencing. Sorry mate, not everyone is a natural born debugger, you see I am your (average?) user with a problem to solve, looking for help.
Next time I'll post you a full log.

Can you however help me out to see what piece of software is handling subs in kodi under Linux?

kodi is compiled with the library to handle subs and shouldn't be using anything external

Could you just tell me what is that piece of software, or is it top secret?
I'm just trying to roll back some packages.

Enabling the debug mode is done inside Kodi itself.
There is no other magic piece of software involved.

Rolling back packages in Arch is not in my job description, you'll need the help of others for that.

Well, mate, would be glad to enable anything, but after another uptdate Xorg is gone too.
Will be back when I get it to work again.

Kodi builds with the libass, fribidi, and harfbuzz libraries to handle rendering of text subtitles, all other functions are part of core Kodi other than extraction of subtitle tracks from av files is done by ffmpeg.  If the subtitles are text, libass on *nix uses system fontconfig for font selection.
