All videos are FAR TOO DARK
#1
Every video file I play through Windows 10 KODI (19.1) are so dark that you can barely see anything at all in night-time scenes.

I've read things about it being a problem with the TV, HDR compatibility, H265, etc., etc., etc.  None of that 'advice' seems to apply because I can play the same videos in VLC, (or any other video player for that matter), and don't have a darkness problem at all. --- Is there a fix for this? A display setting I'm missing? --- I really like this software and don't want to have to lose it just because of this one problem...

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

It sounds like your video chain is not set right.
The chain being Kodi --> GPU --> TV

Here is the first link that comes up on google as an explanation... https://www.benq.com/en-au/knowledge-cen...rence.html

The recommended setting is Limited --> Full --> Limited, but you will just have to test combinations until you are happy.

Kodi setting is here... https://kodi.wiki/view/Settings/System/D...e_(16-235)
Your GPU is set via the operating system or a dedicated app if you have a graphics card installed.
For your TV, check the manual.

Thanks for the links. I don't see a need to changed settings on my GPU or TV when videos play and look PERFECT in any other player other than KODI.  To clarify, what I meant to ask; is there is a setting in KODI (alone) that could correct this problem? (i.e., since this is clearly a problem with KODI -- and not any other player)  Does that make sense?

Thanks

To receive meaningful assistance you will need to provide a full debug log.

The instructions are here... debug log (wiki)

If you are using the Basic Method, then ensure the following is applied...
1.Enable debugging in Settings>System Settings>Logging,
2.Restart Kodi
3.Replicate the problem.
4.Upload the log to Kodi Paste Site manually or use the Kodi Logfile Uploader. (wiki) With either method post the link to the log back here.

If you are using the Advanced Method ensure you have correctly created and applied the advancedsettings.xml file (wiki)

In both instances, you should see the word DEBUG throughout the log.

Note: Full logs only. No partial or redacted logs
Do NOT post your logs directly into the forum. Use the Kodi Paste Site. Post the link to your pasted log in the forum

Are these HDR videos? as playing back HDR on an SDR display can result in videos being dark, so the tone mapping settings may have to be adjusted.

"Are these HDR videos?"

No. Pretty much all my vids are SD, 720p at best. --- I'll upload a debug log, as suggested, as soon as I'm able to.

Thanks
