Linux Refresh rate switching possible on 13th gen NUC with Kodi on Linux?
#1
I've got an intel 13th gen NUC i want to run Kodi on. I know on windows it all works including refresh rate switching & HDR etc...

But i thought i'd give Linux a try, also have some docker containers i want to run on that nuc, so why not just go for linux.

I've now got Ubunto 23.10 installed, installed the latest stable Kodi, enabled "Adjust Display Refresh Rate", but it's not switching.

Googled a bit, found some remarks that i should launch kodi in standalone mode since the window manager doesn't support it (and standalone mode would then run without a window manager), but that doesn't make any difference either (just to be sure i launched the standalone kodi with sudo from the command line, you never know, but also nothing).

I've found some posts regarding this/similar subjects (also regarding HDR, which i obviously would also like), but i just don't find clear information on whether it is possible or not, and if it's possible, how. Have i missed some configuration? Do i need a different distro? Is there an issue with my driver?

Or do i in the end have to stick to windows to get this to work?

did you populate the whitelist?
enabled allow double refresh rate?
"Adjust Display Refresh Rate" -> "On Start/Stop"? (this has more than just enabled)

note linux needs to be running GBM for HDR to work, is that what you installed?

whitelist?? what whitelist? Why do i need a whitelist for refreshrates??

what is "allow double refresh rate"?? where would i enable it? if i google "allow double refresh rate" i get a whole... 4 results...
"Adjust Display Refresh Rate" -> "On Start/Stop"? (this has more than just enabled) It's set to always, as that was what i found was recommended.

You seem to know some arcane knowledge regarding these things. Is there any documentation where i can find all these requirements, i already spent at least an hour googling before making this thread, but this is the first i hear about whitelists, double refreshrates or GBM

start here https://kodi.wiki/view/Settings/System/D...#Whitelist

while kodi will adjust, it needs to know what is allowed - that's the whitelist, if there are no entries in the whitelist (allowed) then kodi will not switch at all because there is nothing to switch to
the second 2 options below that, if a resolution is whitelisted but the refresh rate is not it allows kodi to switch to the correct resolution but at a higher refresh rate f.e. 720p 24Hz is not available but "allow double" is enabled and 720p 60Hz is available then kodi will switch to 720p60

this link should be informative https://wiki.libreelec.tv/configuration/4k-hdr

under linux GBM is the only way kodi supports HDR

i highly suggest trying LibreELEC on your machine as it might be easier to get docker running on libreelec than to get the rest working on a standard linux desktop
then you will have a kodi box with all the bells with docker that brings the whistles

Thanks for all the info Smile

Kind of depressing that using librelec is probably the easiest option >_<.

Just out of curiosity, what does double refreshrate mean in this context? It's a term i'm not familiar with and doesn't seem to make any sense. If it's about refresh rate switching, why is it called double refreshrate O_o.

With that option ticked. 25p content as well as 50p content would both play at 50 hz and no further refreshrate switch would happen.

Refreshrate switching in Linux works out of the box IF and only IF you are not running on wayland. Wayland does not yet have refreshrate switching support.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.
