Solved Mac mini (2018) - Omega with black bar on top
#1
Hello everyone,
I recently switched from a Linux HTPC to a macOS-based system. To be more specific, I am running Kodi Omega on a Mac mini (2018), Intel architecture, Sonoma 14.5. Ever since transitioning, I have been experiencing a display issue in Kodi.
To explain, I have black bars at the top and bottom edges (most prominent on top) as soon as I start Kodi. They are about 0.5 to 1 cm wide and cannot be removed through Kodi's internal video calibration. Notably, these borders are not there when I exit Kodi and the macOS desktop interface is displayed. To clarify, this is not only an issue during video playback. It's the GUI itself that is not displaying correctly.
Here are the things I've tried to solve the issue:
  • Initially, I assumed the problem was caused by different resolution sizes in Kodi and macOS. But in both cases, it is 3840x2160@60Hz.
  • ChatGPT suggested that I disable hardware acceleration. Not that ChatGPT has been of great help in my search for a solution, but I tried that as well. Without success.
  • ChatGPT also suggested clearing my cache, which was also ineffective.
  • I've tried setting my AVR video config to "passthrough." Again, without success.
Interestingly enough, when I downgraded Kodi to Nexus 20.5, this display issue disappeared! I've contemplated just sticking with 20.5, but that's only a last-resort solution in my view.
I couldn't discern much from the log. If needed, I am happy to provide the file.

Thanks in advance for any ideas you might have!

in Omega we switched the windowing backend from SDL to native, I guess this is the reason. Although I don't have such issue on the same machine as yours with a 2k display.

So, does this mean in essence there will be no solution to the issue as of Version 21.0 and beyond?

personally I don't know how to fix an issue that I can't reproduce, sorry.
  • please attach debug log, maybe it'd have some useful info regarding your issue
  • please attach a screenshot of the issue
you could also try investigating / fixing the issue yourself.

Take two...   Debug Log - If you need more info, please let me know.

What's kind of weird is when you look at the first screenshot (the png file from Kodi) there is no black bar.  No

I've also added the screenshot after remotely connecting to my Mac mini from my MacBook. Here you can see the bar clearly. Of course taking a screenshot from a remote screen isn't "the real thing", but what I see here is also what I see when I'm watching TV and other media.

Thanks again for your patience and help!

When I take a look at the resolution of the Kodi screenshot (3840x2136), one can tell there are pixels missing.

you still collected the log not quite correctly Smile After enabling debug logging you should restart Kodi that the debug log is active on app start where Kodi gathers various system info including display.
Quote:3360 x 1890 @ 60 Hz (pixel size: 6720 x 3780 - HiDPI)
this is the highest resolution it detects which looks suspicious, but there're also others like "2048 x 1080 @ 60 Hz (pixel size: 4096 x 2160 - HiDPI)". Does your display actually support them? And do you see these higher resolutions in the Kodi resolution selector?

those missing 24px on top resemble the menu bar. Could you tell your display model?

Hi, I tried creating a debug log that way, but I get an error stating the log file size exceeds 1 mb and therefore cannot be uploaded.

To the first question: No, my Display doesn't support these resolutions. I have a "normal" 65" 4K Sony Bravia TV hooked up to my Marantz AVR. But I do see these resolution in the Kodi res. selector.

either:
  • start Kodi and upload log file immediately after that
  • zip the log and upload it to any file sharing service like Dropbox

unfortunately, no new info there.

Could you try switching to window mode and then back to fullscreen, maybe that'd help? No idea what to do other than that.

I've done that already many times, unfortunately. I can't believe I'm the only person in the (Kodi) universe experiencing this issue.  Undecided
I guess I'll have to revert to 20.5.
None the less, thank you for taking the time and helping out. Very much appreciated!  Nod

Unfortunately I can no longer see the screenshots. Any way you can reupload them?
I've only noticed this topic today and no issue have been reported in github so this is news to me
