Broken Channel Groups Disappear when Channel Tag added with sort index 0
#1
I have a number of IPTV networks with approx 10,000 channels.  When a new channel tag is created in tvheadend (or channel group in kodi), it appears in tvheadend with a default "sort index" of 0 (zero).

For some reason, this impacts my KODI clients and removes all channel groups which are formed from the tags and leaves 10,000 channels in "All Channels" with all other groups disappearing.

How can I diagnose this issue?
Has anyone seen this before?

If I this go back into tvheadend and change the channel tag sort index to anything other than 0, KODI refreshes the channel groups and all of my favourites and channel listings are grouped correctly.  This happens weekly and although I can fix it manually, I would prefer to prevent or automate a fix. I have also tried addressing this issue to the tvheadend forum.

@jonesi100 - I did a quick test with LibreELEC (the closest unit I had at hand, Kodi v20.2).

If I create a new 'channel tag' in TVH with 'sort index' of zero, everything seems OK in the Kodi EPG grid.
When I add 3 channels to the tag, Kodi still seems OK.
When I change the sort order, Kodi rearranges the tags/groups at the top of the EPG grid OK.

I also numbered all of my existing tags and saved them.  I then created a new tag with index zero and it showed OK in Kodi when I added channels.

I was unable to recreate the Kodi behaviour when a new TVH 'channel tag' is added.

How many channels are in the new tags when they are created?  (You mentioned 10,000 channels)
Does Kodi behave strangely when you manually create a zero-index tag in TVH with a handful of channels?

I also had a look at the TVH code that that field has not been touched for a decade.

I can be as simple as just one channel.  What happens is TVH scans the IPTV network and if it detects new channels it will put them in the appropriate groups (or rather assign the default tag).

Usually it is just one channel, but it could be 5 to 10 on some occasions though this is rare. But on my platform, one zero will trigger it.

I have to disable the tag or change the sort index.

I'm going to do a quick test now myself and see if I set a single one back to 0 if it messes up KODI channel groups

when, when I manually set a channel tag it does have an impact - there must be something its picking up from newly created channel tags from TVH!

First of all, Nexus is end of live, no debugging, no fixes. I know there were plenty of fixes for channel groups for Kodi 21. Can you please try Kodi 21 Omega and report back here whether the problem persists.

Will do - didn't realise that was now EOL - probably because I'm running over CoreElec - I'll get that sorted

Have updated to CoreElec (Kodi) 21 Stable but it errors on the TVHeadend Add-on and things like ffmpeg.  When I try to update TVheadend PVR client it says it cannot find a suitable version. I think KODI has not updated the repo from 20 to 21.  How do I manually force this repo update? I'm sure TVHeadend exists in v21 Omega

ok so the repos didn't update for some reason, after trying the nightly build I then updated the repo manually.  Is there a way via the CLI to update all repos and update all plugins

similar to apt-get update on Ubuntu?
