Kodi 21 support mkv Dolby Vision files LG G4, Denon X1800 running Shield Pro 2019

Hello all, my first post here, I'm thinking of purchasing the LG G4, my setup is Denon X1800 with Shield Pro 2019.
I understand that Kodi 21 supports Dolby Vision MKV files now, does this also work with Denon X1800, LG G4 and the Shield Pro 2019 with MKV remux files that I want to play via a NAS?
If so which Kodi version do I have to download to make sure this setup will do fine? I see different versions and types, sorry, but it is not entirely clear to me which version I should download where?

LG G4 also supports MKV files via the internal player of the LG G4 but not sure if it falls back to HDR10 and how can I be sure that if I play the mkv files , I will have TRUE HD or HDMA or Atmos via my Denon?

What do you recommend?

Ditch the Shield, buy a Ugoos AMB6 Plus and put CoreElec on it.  It's the first device to do Dolby Vision properly with FEL support.

I have a CX, Denon X2500H, and Shield Pro and they all play perfectly from my NAS.

Omega is on the App store now or if you want do do it yourself look for the arm64-v8a versions.

By this you mean that all mkv files play as Dolby Vision and do not fall back to HDR10 when you play them via your NAS?

Everything has now been tested and indeed I can now also play Dolby Vision in mkv in Kodi 21,
nly after watching such a file or stopping such a file and then trying to open another file,
odi freezes and you have to stop it and open it again and after this you can open 1 file again.

I've been looking into this option because I'm getting tired of Shield related issues, but I heard that Ugoos has issues with Kodi (and CoreELEC is based on Kodi). Can you confirm that CoreELEC on the Ugoos AMB6 Plus plays everything perfectly?

I would say "almost everything". With some full blu-ray rips in BDMV or ISO format that have a FEL layer, CE on the Ugoos has problems when skipping through chapters or jumping back/forward in time (audio then gets heavily out of sync and video starts to get choppy).

The solution for these problematic movies is to either let CE convert Dolby Vision FEL to profile 8.1 or convert the movie to MKV STDL (Sinlge-track Dual-layer) with MakeMKV.

Awesome, thanks! Thats great to know. Do you happen to have that particular setup for yourself? Also is FEL noticeably better?

I'm considering that setup because I'm having video stuttering issues again on the Shield, because the new version now has a cap of 80 on maxpassthroughoffsyncduration due to apparent issues in the new MAT Packer Rework. Hopefully there won't be any stuttering with CoreELEC on the Ugoos, and being able to play FEL Dolby Vision is the cherry on top.

Though before buying a new android box, I'd really like to try a version of the latest nightly build with a higher maxpassthroughoffsyncduration cap, like 90 or 92. I know @jogal says it's not recommended because of possible issues with AudioEngine errors over 100ms, but I'd still like to try it to see if it might work well on my Shield.

The problem is that I have no clue how to compile Kodi, so I just have to hope someone here can make me a build with a 90-92ms cap.

I do. I have both a Shield Pro 2019 and the Ugoos. Dolby Vision looks better on the Ugoos because it doesn't have the famous "red push" issue.

Also, the CE developers have managed to get true tv-led DV working, which is better than player-led DV, because the TV usually knows better how to handle the DV metadata.

For FEL, it does make a difference with some of the movies I tried. For example, Saving Private Ryan now plays without the flickering in the opening scene. Also, the DV versions of the Back to the Future movies and the Indiana Jones movies look better because of the higher brightness that the FEL layer adds.

That was fixed years ago.

I don't think so. This video from about a year ago shows it's still there:

Wait, do we need to use that setting "Default to Rec.709 for HD videos" from the Developer menu to fix the red push? Wouldn't that be using the wrong color space in HDR and DV movies?
