Playback stops randomly on local files
#1
Hi all, hoping for some help!

I have a Sony Bravia Android TV. Been using it with Kodi for years without issue but the TV started grinding to a halt and I had to do a factory reset.

Before the reset I did a backup (using the official addon) of my library. After the reset I restored the backup and all seemed to be ok.

Problem I'm having is that some files stop playing randomly, usually after less than 1 min. Some files play ok. The files that don't play now played fine before the reset.

The TV is connected to the router via ethernet and the files are stored on a hard drive connected to the router and accessed via samba.

I've tried searching but can't find the solution.

Log is here

Thanks Smile

Scrolling through your debug log it seems that it is complaining about cache a lot.
Did you run v21 before the reset? Reason I am asking is that things have changed for caching in v21, and in my experience not always for the better. Maybe try using the default cache settings if changed or temp disable it for local files ...

I think it was V21 (certainly had the Omega shape logo on startup). I think it used to auto-update.

I hadn't done anything with the cache settings, I just had a quick play though. Anything other than default and the files don't play at all!

I've also checked and there's 6GB free space on the TV so there should be plenty available.

Hmm, I uninstalled and installed 20.5 - works fine.

The backup restore failed though as I was installing to an older version so I must have been on 21 before the reset.

Anyway, will put it down to a bug and stick with 20.5. Does everything I need.

Got called away yesterday, so unable to follow up. As suspected, the caching changes must have been the culprit indeed.
I would have suggested to check the disk space (which you did), try a truly local file (to exclude possible samba related issues) and as a last resort, move away from v21.
Glad your issues got solved. Although i would still be curious if the same could be accomplished in v21 fiddling with cache settings more, especially since it was fine before. But hey, if it works, it works Wink

V21 had multiple fixups after stable was released. Please go with what will be 21.1 from here: http://mirrors.kodi.tv/nightlies/android/arm/Omega/ or respectively http://mirrors.kodi.tv/nightlies/android...v8a/Omega/ if your OS is 64 bit.

You are using SMB shares, so it's seems likely to me that those are using legacy SMB1 which doesn't like a SMB Chunk Size of 128 (the new default in v21) as it was assumed most would have moved on from SMB1 with all it's inherent security issues. If this is the issue you were seeing then changing SMB Chunk Size to 64 KB would have fixed the problem, see https://kodi.wiki/view/Settings/Services...Chunk_Size

Also as fritsch rightly points out there's been many fixes in the Omega nightly builds, including one for this where Kodi now more smartly set's 64 KB if SMB1 is detected.

Thanks for that. I've just installed the latest nightly (16th July) and that seems to be ok. Must be a bug that has been fixed.

Any idea when 21.1 stable will be released? Do I need to update when it is? Or is there likely to be minimal changes from this nightly build?

You're right - still SMB1. I did try the newer protocol some time ago but had too many issues (I forget why!).

Appreciate the help, I might go back to the official release in the next few days and see if the 64kB works.

Cheers all

In case it helps with any development, I tried setting 64kB on the official release and it didn't work. Actually, any chunk size other than default just made it worse.

I've gone back to the nightly release from 16th July and will stick with it since it seems to work fine. Incidently, that one is set to 128kB and manages fine.

The linked Omega nightly will be in 21.1 - so all good. Thanks for feedback.
