Why not to use MKVToolnix (https://mkvtoolnix.download/) to embed external srt (or any other type of subtitles) file into mkv container?
Then you have one small file less on your drive and no issue with LPM :-)
I know, you might have your own reasons to keep a subtitle files separated from mkv file but nowadays subtitles are usually embedded into mkv container together with video and audio streams.

I've been using that program for years to add subs or remove audio from a movie now and then but the separate subs i have now are from a tv series (60 episodes) so would take ages to remux them all. I did a google search to see if there's a program to add the subs without rewriting the whole file but i don't think that's possible.

You could look into MKVToolnix's menu: Multiplexer - Show command line.
Then you can create a batch file that will do the job of embedding srt files into your mkv files in one go.

as @rafikW proposed you can use MKVtoolnix to embed any external subtile and easily document the forced tag, language etc... if needed.

But if you really want to use external sub files in your case, you just have to name them like that (and store them close to your movie files) :

your_movie_filename.eng.forced.srt

Kodi will read it first, place it even before all the mkv embedded tracks in the track list, it will generate the "forced" tag properly, and LPM should catch it with no issue.
I just checked/tested it now.

Still some mass file renaming required (vs batch mkvtoolnix runs) but  that will work

Brill this worked great! (used a batch file renamer) I might try one of the other methods mentioned in the future. Thanks for all the replies

I recently updated Kodi from 18 to 21 and discovered this LPM addon, but I can't use it at the moment. I don't know which parameter setting is wrong to do the right thing. The version is 1.0.4, with the bug fixed for the pt_BR language.

I want to have Signs and Songs subs chosen by default. I see there is a setting to chose forced subs but that does not work on all my files. I'd like to have a subtitle selected if it has the words 'sign' or 'song' in its title. Is that something I can do with this addon? I tried doing that with the regex filename preference setting but it did not work (or I'm going about it the wrong way). If anyone knows how to do this I'd appreciate the help.

I was able to get most of this functionality (having signs and songs chosen by default) by adding some keywords to the black list: "dialogue, undefined, full, dialog, honorifics, commentary". 
For subtitle preferences I set:
- primary language to English forced
- secondary language to English not forced
Part of the problem I ran into is some shows I watch have all their subs set as forced or the opposite. So the subtitle preferences by itself wasn't enough. May be a more accurate way to do this but its what I came up with.

Hello and sorry for a late answer, that was vacation time for me  

from the log the addon is activated and working, but not finding any suitable subtitle (portuguese-brazil), that would be according to your any:pt-br rule.
Can you send here a mediainfo output of the video file so we can check all the streams it contains ?

For prioritizing the "Signs & Songs" tracks this is probably the best you can do at this stage (using the Blacklist keywords to exclude most others ....).
I had been thinking about a "Whitelist keywords" feature to always prioritize some tracks based on keywords, but afraid it would become quite heavy reviewing again and aagin all tracks each time. I'll think more about it if I can find a light way to do it.

About "forced" tracks afaik this tag is supposed to be used only for subtitles that translate foreign or alien dialogues vs the main movie language (some german in a english speaking movie an example). Not sure why you would have so many "forced" tracks in fact ...

I got bored, so I took a quick glance at your source. NOB was indeed missing in the lang code file.

So I added it for you, along with new norwegian (NNO).

For those not in the know, "norwegian" isn't a language, but an umbrella term for the three languages used in Norway. Bokmål, new norwegian, and northern sami. Internationally, however, bokmål is considered as norwegian. Some services (like Disney) just uses norwegian (no, nb or nor), while some others (like Netflix or Amazon) use norwegian bokmål (no-nb, nb or nob) when tagging their subs.

you're correct, current language table knows only "Norwegian - no - nor".
The bokmål tag/language is not supported, so your 2nd condition is just skipped, and nob language tracks ignored.
I propose to add the 3-digits "nob" code as alias to "nor" in next update. Similar to "German - ge - ger,deu" for example. That will solve it when using custom conditional like you do now.
Tell me if ok?

(Another solution is to create a dedicated "Norwegian (bokmål) - nb - nob" line to the language table. Like for "Portuguese (Brazil)".  Bigger code change, but would work also in standard conditional drop down lists...)
