Problem with CDDB while ripping an Audio CD
#1
Hello, I have a problem with Kodi that I'm trying to resolve without success...
I have Kodi v21 installed on Windows 11 and I can't rip an audio CD with it (if i want the CD informations).

Initially, I had the following error message:
Error [3] Error open socket
After some research here, I changed the CD info server by creating an advancedsettings.xml file in UserData containing:

Code:
<advancedsettings version="1.0">
     <cddbaddress>gnudb.gnudb.org</cddbaddress>
</advancedsettings>

This still doesn't work, but the issue is different now. The CD info retrieval window seems to be stuck.
Either it stays frozen and I have to kill the Kodi process, or after a while I get the error message:
Error [401] Specified CDDB entry not found.

Here's the log :
Code:

What can i try?
Thanks for your help.

P.S.: My setup is a bit unique: it’s actually a modified RockOla JukeBox that uses Kodi instead of the original, now obsolete software. It would be really great if audio CD ripping could work with Kodi, even though I know this feature is no longer maintained.

No idea?

The problem is the same for just reading an audio CD.

Is the problem with one particular disc only, or all disks. Because the error seems to indicate that particular disk is the problem...
No such CD entry in database.

Can I ask why you use Kodi to rip CD's? There are much better solutions for cd ripping.

This does not work with any disk. In the logs I have the impression that the server finds the name of the disk correctly :

Xcddb::Recv Captured 77 bytes // Buffer= 77 bytes. Captured data follows on next line
200 misc c40c7a0f Pascal JEAN-Jean BRENDERS / UN MOMENT DE DETENTE MUSICALE

I would really like it to work with Kodi, because it's a Jukebox and the Windows interface is not at all suitable (it's not a multi-touch screen, only one point).
I use the estouchy addon.

In fact the problem is also found in reading, not just for ripping.
So I find it a shame not to be able to recover the information from the disk (track01, track02...)

If i manually search the discid on the gnudg.org website, i can found the informations :
https://gnudb.org/cd/mic40c7a0f (for example with that CD)

I've given up using Kodi to rip CDs years ago. It was always a very basic feature and there are much better ripping programs available (many of them FOSS). This has long been an issue, e.g. see this post by Kodi music guru Dave Blake. Also, GnuDB is basically a fork of CDDB, and the CDDB API was always rather clunky. I remember the days of AudioGrabber vividly <shiver>

I shouldn't have insisted on ripping the CD because it's also annoying to read.

Isn't it just possible to have Kodi use MusicBrainz or something to identify the CD? (without necessarily ripping it)

If you use something like Exact Audio Copy then that uses Musicbrainz data to tag the resulting files as it comes with a plugin for that as standard. There's also the CUETools Database Plugin for EAC that uses various methods including Musicbrainz, discogs and FreeDB to fetch metadata.

Be aware that support for Estouchy has been dropped in recent versions of Kodi, so if you have something that's working for you, I'd strongly recommend sticking with your current version.

Since I'm using dBpoweramp for ripping, I never looked back.
If the data is not available with their databases, I'm editing it manually with Mp3Tag.

Yeah, I think this is a bug, since the issue also happens when loading a CD into a drive on a system running Kodi. Last time I tried, I was presented with a list of 6 versions of the CD entered, and no matter which one I selected, nothing happened. So, physical audio playback on Kodi is rather broken it appears, unless I'm missing something.

This is great news. I assume it's been tagged for 21.2? I can't tell from the Github issue page if it's going to ship in 21.2 or 22.0 (or both).
